My manager quit?
« on: August 14, 2012, 11:49:55 am »

So I'm busy chugging away at my latest, three-year-old fort, using the job manager to queue up some jobs since my newly-elected mayor is cheesed off that he doesn't have a proper room.  Close the job manager window.  Jaunt around the fort a bit to see what's going on.  Open the job manager window again and nothing happens.  My manager has abdicated his role.  As he was also my bookkeeper and broker, this means that a whole bunch of positions just opened up.  So I assign some new dorfs and all goes back to the way it should.

There were no ambushes present on the map.  No stealthed thieves or snatchers.  I've looked in the sleeping area and see no bodies, so it wasn't a vampire.  I've had no invaders breach the fort, so there's no dust or extract or anything like that lying around.  I don't remember the name of the dorf I assigned, so I can't find out if he's actually still alive, but I've let the fort run for a while after I noticed he had buggered off and still have gotten no missing or death notices.  The unit list doesn't show anyone who's not already dead, which is only a couple of dorfs so far.

I have had a necromancer siege, but a minotaur showed up and slaughtered him along with all of his zombies.  Since then there have been no further outbreaks of the undead.

Where the heck did my manager/broker/bookkeeper go?  Can dorfs abdicate their positions once assigned?  I've never seen nor heard of that happening before.  Is he gone missing or died himself somewhere and nobody has noticed so there was no announcement of his gone missing?  If he had no friends (which is unlikely since he was one of my founding seven) will there still be announcements?

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

I've never seen this happen without the dwarf getting killed.

Install Dwarf Therapist. You can sort the list by migration wave, which will tell you who the starting seven were. Then you can see who had manager skills--or if there's nobody, he's dead.

Mystery kind of solved?

I found a corpse on the floor.  Still no notices of missing or dead even when the corpse was picked up and shoved into a coffin, but now he's showing up in the unit list as dead.

I still have no idea the cause of death because there was no announcement of "Has been found completely drained of blood" or "Has died of old age" or anything else.  Are there circumstances of death where there would be no announcement of any sort?

Not as far as I know. You may have turned that announcement off, or simply overlooked it when it happened though.

There are some methods of death which garner merely an "Urist McCorpse has been found dead." More likely, you missed the message.

Anything in the combat reports? Even if the exact details are gone, you should still be able to see the date of the last announcement.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Can you make a slab for him still? If you can, it should give you more info to go on.

No combat reports.  Looking back through the announcements I don't see anything either.  I haven't turned announcements off, and I still see a couple of "Dead cat has been found" left over from the last ambush, but nothing for my erstwhile manager.

It did prompt me to investigate my dorfs for pointy teeth and I did find a vampire, but I have no idea if the two are related since nobody said he had been drained of blood.

He's in a coffin now, but if I can still build a slab, I'll do that and see if it tells me anything new.
