An Ambush! Curse all firends of nature!
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:16:17 am »

What a surprise! Was it my clear-cutting of my embark area (tropical jungle. lots of trees)? Was it that wood furnace right next to Trade Depot constantly burning that wood to fuel my industry?

Good riddance anyway. I already managed to buy a breeding pair of Giant Tigers (yay!), so i don't need them :D

Now i have dozen or so elven corpses laying around. I need to change wood properties to something better, because they are pathetic. Steel, perhaps? Would material_template_default in savegame raws be the right place?

If you make elven weaponry better, do give the raws.

You may want to look up the major mods in the Modding section.  Most, if not all, of them have various ways of making wood be on par with various metals.

Mod the elves so that their wooden weapons are poisoned. Also, make them ride dragons. That should do it.

Maybe you could mod the wood to be heavier than slade and mod the elves to prefer war hammers?

There is a token in the entities_default raw that decides if a civ uses wooden weapons and armor or not.

Make them wield weapons made from the bones of the vanquished tree murderers! Perhaps not the most powerful possible material but atleast it would suit their ethics.

Aye, nice idea, bone is better than wood, is nice for arrows, spears and sword for stabing, and bone armor too.

Giant tigers? There's a supermarket called that!
(I daren't visit it, though, the surrounding customer car-parks have vicious tins of spaghetti hoops hiding behind every abandoned shopping trolley, herds of pre-packed fruit stampede across the car-lanes, and if you go there at night you can hear the howl of feral packs of washing powder, as they roam the disabled parking spaces looking for prey...)

I thought elves no longer had a care for too much wood (mis-)use?  I know you could upset them by ripping the caravan off a few times, though.  Still, you seem to have gotten the result you wanted, so probably academic now.

If you gave them a diplomat (either by modding the raws or by using DFHack's "fixdiplomats" plugin), then it could have been caused by accepting and then violating a logging quota or by allowing the diplomat to die.

Otherwise, it was probably the result of killing and/or offending a caravan.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

To make elves tougher while still keeping an elvish flavor, either:

1. Give them mithril or elvenwood or something for weaponry and armor.
2. Give them magic of some kind. Dwarves can't fight as well if they've been turned into a rabbit.
3. Give them boosted physical stats, speed, and so forth. If an elf gets in two or three blows for each one a dwarf deals, the elf is getting a big advantage.

I did use DFHack fixdiplomats/merchants command, so yes, it was the logging operations that did it. The conversation with Elf diplomat is hilarious, btw, they are quite arrogant!

I modded wood to have steel properties for now (apart from weight, i don't want my kapok bins to weight 50 times more suddenly). Still waiting for another ambush, though. If that won't work enough i'll try something else (can't mod entities, since it's ongoing fort). Modding Elf attributes sounds easy enough for me to do it, magic is outside my capabilities.

Btw, i had the most pathetic goblin siege. 10 goblins? Seriously? Their ambushes were a lot more dangerous... (that's first siege for that fort)
