Then it could have been caused by accepting and then violating a logging quota or by allowing the diplomat to die.
I am both horrified and amazed at how DF can produce these sentences. Superb.

Oh, they returned! This time they are riding giant grashoppers!

(Ok, there are some giant war leopards, too. And they entered the trade depot where human wagonless (forgot to open the gate in time) caravan sits. Good, let's close the second gate and watch from the walls how they fare against humans after my changes to wood template...

The death of a diplomat doesn't need to be caused by your military - it can just as easily be caused by a poorly timed Goblin attack (from the Diplomat's perspective) or an "unfortunate accident" (whether intentional or truly accidental). In fact, prior to 0.31.xx's ability to place Kill orders on friendly units, that was pretty much the only way an Elven diplomat could get killed.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
