Okay, I'm gonna keep playing with the gargoyle, because that seems safe if expensive.
Three more gems and when it animates I try to talk to it. Just small talk to start out with. "Hi, I'm Javier. What's a gargoyle like you doing in a dungeon like this?" that sort of thing.

The statue is obvious to your small talk, but it crushes your three gems anyways.

Me too. I expected a near-TPK a lot sooner from this place. Or at least for someone to stick an arm in the demon's mouth. I happen to know what that one is from a Giant in the Playgrounds comic.

The gargoyle speaks in a loud, booming voice: YOUR SACRIFICE WAS NOT IN VAIN. LOOK TO THE FOURTH TO FIND YOUR GAIN. Geez, I wonder what it could be talking about?

As you pick up the broken-off arm, you hear something roll into the north-western corner of the room.
