GENERAL INFORMATION

You're close to the elevator leading up the bridge now.  There's only one more room to get through.... the ship's in-built Cathedral.  It's mostly for those who are stuck on the ship for long periods of time, the crew mostly, but something tells you it won't be that easy.  Putting your ear to the door you hear. . . chanting, chanting in a language only the Celestial can understand.  "Demons... they've summoned up a demon somehow." she informs the party.  You can also just barely hear some faint groaning on the other side.  Looking around the room you see an air vent you might be able to get through, if they hear you though you'd be sitting ducks.  Of course there's always bursting in the front door as well.

((Feel free to ask for more detail in your posts, that's just what you all notice right off to save everyone a turn of go look for clues about next room's inhabitants.))

Scatter

Nepthym felt a certain heat-it felt like it was radiating from the center of her brain. She could see red streaks on the edges of her vision. It was...anger. Rage. Demons-they were her opposite, and her nature was to destroy them...

She shook her head, trying to clear these thoughts. No one probably noticed she was starting to lose control-her skin was glowing (Faint outlines of runes began to etch themselves under her clothes), and the room became colder and tougher-like metal...

Nepthym had killed too many, too fast, and the voices-a melodic, wordless chant-was getting louder. Blotting out all thought and reason. Consuming the person she was.

Nepthym fought against it-she looked deeply over at Mordekhai, summoning up some raw, unbridled emotions-not entirely dark, but bereft of anything right and good-it was just the pure measure of passion and power. Nothing meant by it-he was just a tool. After a moment, the voices dimmed (as if she had offended them) and began to grow quiet. The changes ebbed.

"...I'll sneak in. The rest of you can prepare to breach the door. Keep an eye out-kill the Summoners or ruin the circle if they're trying to bring another one. Otherwise, take out the Demon. Hopefully it's only a small one..."

Action: Sneak through the vent

"A Demon?" Shruick quietly mutters, echoing what was no doubt the thoughts of the others. Shruick stood in silent shock as Nepthym turned to mess with the nearby air vent.

This makes no sense, a demonic summoning during a pirate raid? Shruick turned over the possibility in his mind. Most of the demon's numbers may have retreated from the world, but it's no doubt still entirely possible to summon them yourself with the proper preparations. Shruick muses as he paces quietly around the room, Or at least, so I've heard...

But none of his rationalizations seemed to place the situation in any plausibility. Pirate summoning? Unlikely, the battle is probably well in hand since they have bribed guards just lounging around and not elsewhere fighting. Crew counterattack? Also unlikely, what crewman would have the necessary implements to perform a summoning in what should have been a routine trip? Shruick smirked slightly at the idea of a demonic summoning kit behind a glass box with 'Break in case of pirate raid' printed on it, The only remaining possibility is a third party, perhaps a passenger delivering such materials using them in an attempt to liberate the liner again? Or a rouge pirate who fell to demonic corruption attempting to take the liner for their own?

Shruick gritted his teeth, none of that would help the situation as it is right now. All that mattered right now was subduing this threat. The thought of facing a demon was more than off-putting. He didn't think that his simple Sabre would be enough, and that's not counting the summoners no doubt still in the room. He briefly considered avoiding the room entirely, but then recalled Nepthym mentioning the possibility of the Summoners trying to bring in more demons. Shruick's jaw tightened even further, "We need to contain this situation" he said, repeating his thoughts.

Shruick tightened his grip on his Sabre and stood near the door, prepared to Breach the door if/when Nepthym manages to get inside.

Shruick stood silently for a moment, regarding his companion's reactions. An afterthought strikes him, "I hope you know some offensive holy magic" Shruick states to Aegnor, disquiet evident in his voice.

Tikan heard the words of her comrades without really hearing, without the words seeming to pass through her ears. She silently echoed Shruick. A demon? She'd heard of them, no more. She briefly wondered what they were getting into, but realised it didn't change the present. She blocked out the pain and got ready to enter.

"Do you?" she whispered to Aegnor.

Enter the room in last position. Dodge through to Thrust attack first enemy I see who looks like some kind of summoner.

Aegnor clutched his head, feeling slightly woozy, the feeling of something so direct against his holy magic, caused a fair amount of interference in all of his senses. Leaning slightly against a wall, he mentally read out a mantra, using it to keep his mind focused for the presence. And in a moment, the interference was gone, with the ever so slightest feeling of something holy. Although he was most likely imagining it.

Preparing to join the party, he sadly shook his head. "I'm a travelling healer, not a holy warrior. The most I can do is shield and heal us. Sorry. I might be able to do something about the summoning, but I'm not sure."

Aegnor settled up behind the group, and cast holy shield.

Demons...Mordekhai turned to the rest of the group. While he was a crusader, and had been taught how to cope with such a moment, the rest of the group could be slightly shaken. The young man himself had never fought demons, but he was well-aware of how dangerous they were and how necessary it was to take them down.

His gaze moved along his companions, some anxious, others steeling their resolve and Nepthym, who seemed to be under some kind of transformation and staring very strangely at him. He had grown used to the girl already, but that look she had in her eyes was new to him. After a few moments the changes on her body seemed to subside and Mordekhai shifted his gaze somewhere else.

"It is time." he whispered.

Breach the door and move inside the door, attacking any visible summoners or enemies.

Zealots and Demons, Turn 20:  (Un)Holy Descriptions Batman!

Quote from: Dwarmin
Action: Sneak through the vent

[1]  You try to enter the vent without taking the grate off of it.  [3+2(Sneak)vs.1(Perception)]  You do so incredibly silently.

Quote from: CrimsonEon
Breach the door if/when Nepthym manages to get inside.

[6]  Seeing Nepthym start trying to breach the vent you burst through the door sabre at the ready.  "Prepare to die demons!" you shout as you enter the Cathedral.  Inside you see all variety of defiled tapestries and the altar at the front is dripping with fresh blood.  You can guess it's source as the smell of rotting flesh hits your nose and you see two fresh zombies standing near you.

Near the altar is the demon, a small two-legged creatures with long claws growing out of his three toes and four fingers (including thumb).  He has spikes growing from the base of neck all the way down the length of his tail which is nearly as long as he is tall.  As he chants you see a forked reptilian tongue come out of distinctly bovine face... it's as though all the skin from his face were flayed away leaving a dirty skull behind.  Red flames glow where it's eyes should be and long horns for goring are coming out of the sides of his head.  The rest of his body is covered in scales , he is wearing armor remnants mostly; one pauldron, a tattered red talbard that looks like it might have some kind of mail underneath it, a wristguard, and two knee coverings that are covered in spikes.  There is also a steel covering for the tip of his tail, it looks wickedly sharp and is barbed.  He is wielding a staff that is channeling much of his magical energy.  The head of the staff looks as though it were formed from the hand of another demon of the same variety.

Across from the demon you see an elven mage, clearly the culprit of this demonic summoning and the defilement of this Cathedral.  The mage is wearing green blood-splattered robes with a thick leather cloak.  He is also wearing a bizarre kind of hat, it sits close to his head and is attached with a snug, green cord.  The hat seems to have some sort of mask attached which is covering the left side of his face.  You can see he is carrying several knifes, many of them looks like they are used to make wicked sacrifices, underneath the cloak you can just barely make out the glint of a hidden pistol.

The zombies seem to be reanimated corpses of some guards that were assigned to protect the pirate mage.  They are wearing all of their armor, their weapons are strangely missing however.  You can see clearly how they were sacrificed, a dagger pierced the back of their head, leaving them without much of a brain, just an animated corpse.

In the center of altar you see a captured crewmember... one of the engine workers you think.  She is crying as the demon continues to chant.

Quote from: lawastooshort
Enter the room in last position. Dodge through to Thrust attack first enemy I see who looks like some kind of summoner.

[1]  You would go into the room to check it out, but you suddenly start cramping, like something is drawing at your very life force.  You fall to one knee for a few seconds until the feeling passes.

Quote from: Ochita
Aegnor settled up behind the group, and cast holy shield.

[2]  You feel the same wave of negative energy that passed over Tikan beginning to affect you.  You quickly say a prayer, preventing the aura from affecting the rest of your party, your prayer hinders you from shielding everyone however.

Quote from: Caellath
Breach the door and move inside the door, attacking any visible summoners or enemies.

[2]  You feel yourself frozen in place until Aegnor's prayer takes effect.  As it does you feel the warmth of life return to your bones.  "So this... this is what fighting a demon is like." you shudder a little trying to picture having to fight hundreds pouring forth from the Ancient Gate every day.

Quote from: Demon Shaman
Continue Casting

[2]  The Demon tries to continue casting but the loud interruption breaks his concentration.  Turning to the Draconian he hisses out in a low, dark voice.  "You will pay for your intrusion here mortal."

Quote from: Zombie Guard 1
Become alerted to threat.

[6]  This zombie turns around... in completely the wrong direction and tries to start attacking a nearby bench.

Quote from: Zombie Guard 2
Become alerted to threat.

[2]  This zombie stands there, apparently not yet registering the Draconian standing in front of him.

Quote from: Elven Pirate Mage
Force zombies to attack with magic.

"You idiots, THERE!  Attack the Draconian!" he screams as he begins to channel magic. [3] [2 mana expended] The zombies seem dimly aware of the Draconian now and begin charging at him.

Break

Nepthym analyzed her foe. Demons. They were not a common foe...but she had studied them. Strong natural armor meant they preferred to wear light armor, if any-it allowed them to use their natural dexterity to great effect. Of course, they could use both.

It was dangerous to engage him so directly, and Nepthym sort of wished she had a rifle right now...but she had to stop the ritual, and there was no choice. Whatever was going to happen would be bad.

She didn't think herself a hero for this-Nepthym had illusions about who and what she was. She had just decided now would be a good time to stop running.

Action: Sneak attack in all the confusion. Kill the chanting demon from ambush if possible (try to strike at the base of the neck, between the neck scales and the skull, where the spine would be) or at least interrupt his ritual someway by forcing him to engage me.

OOC: @V-Norrec: I like the descriptions-it gave a clear mental image of what we're facing. Of course, the crewmember didn't get much of one, but that's almost motivation enough to save her.

Shruick paused upon seeing the massive monstrosity presiding over the ritual. A massive wave of fear and mind-sapping blight seemed to pass over them, causing the other's muscles to seize. Nothing in his relatively calm life could have prepared him for this. Facing down a demon, in the midst of a pirate raid no less. Disgusted by the demon's features, he immediately turns to the wicked mage. Shruick's ears seemed to go numb to the elf's howlings, only focused on the zombie guards slowly coming to their senses.

Two guards, lacking weapons but ample bodyguards nonetheless. Shruick assumed a defensive stance, turning his side to the zombies, They're focused on me, I guess that's what a loud mouth earns you.

"Leave the thrall to me, stop the others!" Shruick hissed loudly.

Keep the zombies occupied by fighting, try to get within striking distance of the mage

The world is still for a moment as Mordekhai calmly takes in the situation in front of him - in his usual analytic manner - before it all comes back crashing down as the crying of the innocent woman rings in his ears.

There is no reason to hesitate and no moment to spare. Training is useless if he is unable to save the innocent. The normally calm, laid-back Crusader's eyes narrow in a feral way, undisputed anger and despise showing through the slit of his helmet as his mouth twists into a snarl. He cries in fury as the woman suffers, praying endlessly as he charges so that he may not fail in such a crucial moment.

"...May my body not falter, my armor resist the bludgeonings of fate and my weapon be my enemies' demise...As the legions of Hell charge upon my figure, I stand unbowed, for I have faith in me...And they shall be purged." he intones, hoping for the best before his prayers degenerate into a roar of rage.

If an innocent is sacrificed right in front of him, he won't be able to call himself a crusader anymore. He shall have failed his most important and sacred duty.

Interrupt the summoning! Tangle with the Demon Shaman, kill him, kill, kill!!

Tikan had only killed humans before. This was... unnerving. Terrifying, if she stopped to think about it. Myths and legends rising up to fight her. She joined the celestial woman in going straight for the one who seemed to be the source of the evil. She had no idea what it was capable off, or even if it was vulnerable. She was briefly upset at this being unfair, and at the thought that everything could end right here, thanks to life’s unfairness. Her face showed nothing, however, and she sprang into the attack.

Try to spy a vulnerable spot in the demon. Thrust it.

Aegnor took a step back, angered at this display. Killing people was one thing, but cursing their bodies into undeath?  Only a depraved man could have done this.. Aegnor was angered, and he sprung into action. Focusing, he began to Cast holy Shield on the group.

Zealots and Demons, Turn 21:  Maxed out Shields and the End of Initiative.

Quote from: Dwarmin, 93
Action: Sneak attack in all the confusion. Kill the chanting demon from ambush if possible (try to strike at the base of the neck, between the neck scales and the skull, where the spine would be) or at least interrupt his ritual someway by forcing him to engage me.

[1]  You charge in the front door and all eyes fall upon you as you charge straight for the Demon, hoping your appearance would be surprise enough.  [1]  As you get close the Demon's Tail whips out and knocks you to the ground.  The demon growls deeply at you.  "You will soon pay the price of your arrogance."

Quote from: Elven Pirate Mage, 63
Augment Demon Shaman

[2]  The mage sits there trying to concentrate on his spell but has trouble with all the noise around him.

Quote from: CrimsonEon, 59
Keep the zombies occupied by fighting, try to get within striking distance of the mage

[6]  You keep the zombies focused on you, and try to get near the mage.  Every time you start to make progress towards the mage though the zombies coral you away and you quickly find your back against the wall.  [5] [(4+1-1)x2=8 damage]  You manage to slice one of the Zombies arms off through the mail somehow.  You briefly consider throwing it at the mage, that wouldn't be sensible though.

Quote from: lawastooshort, 55
Try to spy a vulnerable spot in the demon. Thrust it.

[1] There are no vulnerable spots in the demon, between the scales, the bits of armor, and his defensive tail, it's going to be hard to get through.  [3] (([3]+[4]+1-2)/2 = 3 damage)  You manage to pierce the scales in his upper arm after charging forward.  Unfortunately you're well within striking range and his eyes glint with untold horrors he will visit upon you.

Quote from: Zombie Guard 1, 43
Kill the Draconian

[3] [3/2=2 damage]  The zombie manages to bite Shruick's shoulder.  Thankfully everyone knows that zombies can't turn other people into zombies otherwise this might be a problem.

Quote from: Caellath, 41
Interrupt the summoning! Tangle with the Demon Shaman, kill him, kill, kill!!

[6]  You get close to the demon but he knocks you all the way back to the doors of the Cathedral with a single wave of his staff.  "I will deal with you later, crusader."  he spits out, particular emphasis on the last word.

Quote from: Zombie Guard 2, 37
Kill the Draconian!

[3] [4/2=2 damage]This zombie manages to bite the Draconian's other shoulder.  At this rate, they might start frenzying...

Quote from: Demon Shaman, 27
Use tail to perforate the Celestial while strangling the life from this impudent moral.

[1] The demon whips his tail at the grounded Celestial but it doesn't even come close to her.  [5] [1x2=2 damage]  He manages to pry Tikan off of his arm, and holds her aloft his hand wrapped tightly around her throat, his claws digging into the back of her neck.  "Now, you will know the fury of the Nether." he whispers into Tikan's mind.

Quote from: Ochita, 25
Cast holy Shield.

[5] [8x2=16 damage shield]  Though it took a significantly longer than normal time to cast, the shield is immense and should be enough to turn the tide in favor of your friends, you hope.

Enemies

Elven Pirate Mage:  Health, 20/20.  Mana, 38/40.
Demon Shaman:  Health, 22/25.  Mana, 60/60.  Bleeding, takes two damage next turn.  Body Shield, All attacks have a chance of hitting Tikan.
Zombie Guard 1:  Health, 7/15.
Zombie Guard 2:  Health, 15/15.

Shruick gave a loud howl as the zombie teeth dug into his shoulders, his arms slackening. Their assault continued as he attempted to thrash them off, but they refused to let go. Fortunately, not a moment too soon a brilliant light enveloped Shruick's skin, repulsing the thrall off of him.

His arms felt heavier, but Shruick managed to pull himself back into a fighting stance, I'll have to thank Aegnor for that, assuming we live.

Focus renewed, Shruick moves to Continue fighting the zombies while trying to close in on the mage.
