The Lonely Mountain
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:11:33 am »

I had an idea for a megaproject: to build the Kingdom Under the Mountain depicted in The Hobbit, build up a giant hoard of treasure, then capture a dragon and unleash Smaug on the dwarves and make the Lonely Mountain his lair. One thing that is getting in the way of me starting the project is that we don't really know much about the Kingdom Under the Mountain (at least I don't) apart from it had a bunch of dwarves in it and it's got a secret entrance. Another problem is keeping the dragon in the mountain after all the dwarves are killed off as well as keeping all the treasure in one hoard without it getting scattered all over the map. I'm hoping some people on the forum can help me with these problems (if they can be solved at all).

To keep items from scattering, you can use DFHack's Lair command that actually makes it a lair. And it also had several guard towers, for the dwarves stayed in one before they went into the Mountain.

Also, if you've got wooden furniture in the dining hall, you have some big issues anyways.
This is Dwarf Fortress, not the Fluffy Wambler Express.

Is there any way to do it in Vanilla? I don't like to muck about with mods.

No, there is not.

Alright well then I'll probably employ that method when everything else is ready. The more pressing issue is building the fortress as accurately as possible. Also since buildings aren't moved after abandonment, if I put all the treasure in chests would it stay there?

how odd, I was just wondering about constructing LakeTown the other day.
the only tip I can give you is, go big! at least for the main hall,  that need to be several z-levels high and preferably with a good view the surrounding lands. other than that it will probably end up looking like a fairly standard dwarf fort, bonus points for naming the dwarves (semi) accurately!

I'd say that the dragon definitely has to be wild, so that when you abandon the fort, it'll stay there. Be sure to make it go to the desired area.

I found this map file for minecraft that is a replica of the lonely mountain.  Do not know how accurate it is, though.

That would be awesome. It would be even better if we had them both on the same world, but we would have to arrange how to do that.

Will do (try).

My plans with the dragon are simply to gen a world that definitely has a few dragons in it, then set up a bunch of cage traps around and wait for it to attack. I'm only going to unleash Smaug into his lair when the whole project is complete.

I could attempt to create the map in perfect world, then give post the parameters here.  You could then pass the game off when one of you is finished.  There is one map in the Perfect world DF thread, but I wouldn't recommend it due to the immense size they made the lonely mountain. (100+ embarks big!)

That would be lovely! I think a Lonely Mountain that barely fits in a max-size embark sounds good.

Also do u have any control over Civ names? If so it would be awesome if one of the Dwarf Civs was named The Longbeards (or something similar).

Sadly, I do not.  That is controled by the game.  So is temperature, so I will need to figure out a good work around.

How high should the mountain be?

Not that tall compared to its width. The mountain doesn't really have a steep peak, just a slightly taller bit in the center that the six ridges arms protrude from. What's important is that two of the ridges form the valley at the southern end of the mountain (preferably with a waterfall, but that can be accomplished with dwarven engineering if necessary) for the entrance, and that there is space to the west for the backdoor. The entire mountain can actually be larger than 1 max-sized embark if it looks better that way, but what's important is that we have the valley to south for the entrance, and plenty of room for the inside tunnels and stuff as well as space on the western face of the mountain for the backdoor.

The map from the hobbit, or the whole LOTR map?  (The hobbit will be smaller)(Either with have inventiveness to deal with the unchangeable temperature mapping.)
