No One Feeds Prisoners and Wounded

This is becoming a serious problem in my fort, chained prisoners and hospital patients do not get fed and watered enough. I'm not getting migrants anymore for some reason and the attrition is slowly killing the fort because missed mandate deadlines or broken arms are basically a death sentence.

EVERY SINGLE DWARF has the Feed Prisoners and Wounded labor enabled. Including children and legendary fighters (I'm a dirty cheater, and desperate)

I have food and drink stockpiles withing reach of the prisoners, but sometimes they don't get filled, and dwarves don't seem to pick up the slack often enough. The prison chains are in a high traffic area, next to a dining room and the main food stockpile.

The hospital is across the hall from the well, with buckets stockpiled nearby, but still i just had a wounded soldier die of thirst.

The weird thing is i've seen dwarves bring water to people who are not wounded. I once saw a child bring a bucket of water to a healthy soldier stationed in the arena.

This is starting to seem less like FUN and more like some sort of glitch. :(

This may not work at all, but try making the hospital a meeting area.
Also for prisoners, you can have food/drink stockpiles in their 3x3 area for them to feed themselves.

I'm not sure about wounded, but with prisoners its very easy. Build this prison setup:

D = door
j = chain
s = food stockpile, accepts only edible raw plants
X = grate over water, requires sewer system under prison complex with fresh water

Each cell holds 6 prisoners, and they get all of the plump helmets and water they want. Its very easy to build multiple cells next to each other, such that even a huge fortress may need no more than 6-8 cells maximum. No prisoner will ever die of hunger or thirst (assuming you have enough plump helmets in your fortress, but this is rarely a problem) as they can all feed themselves.

Prisoners also get happy thoughts from being in jail. They get to admire the chains, door, and grate assuming you build them out of high quality materials with highly skilled craftsdwarves, and prisoners can also chat with each other and make new friends.

He says he's got food and drink stockpiles, they just aren't getting filled.  Are those stockpiles just additional stockpiles that might catch overflow if your main stockpiles fill up, or are they linked to the main stockpiles, taking from them?

In case of an emergency, you can burrow all your citizens so that they only have access to food/drink and the hospital.

It sounds to me like he doesn't have enough idle dwarves to pick up the low-priority jobs.

This works well. If there are no other jobs that can be taken in the burrow, then they'll have no choice but to go get food and water. Well, they could just stand around or fall asleep on the floor or go and get food and drink for themselves, but even with the terribly low priority of feeding/watering other dwarves somebody's bound to take the job before deaths start happening.

The civilian alert only needs to be active for a short amount of time, just long enough for the burrow's jobs to be taken. I use this mostly for lever-pulling when there aren't enough idlers for the job to be taken immediately.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I think, you should take a useles dwarf, which have a relevant traits about liking helping and similar, then turn off all jobs (hauling too) except for feeding Prisoners/Wounded. This should help.

I prefer 3x3 jail cells.

(1) bed in the corner
(1) table in another corner, with (1) chair between the bed and table
The chain goes in the center
Then a pair of 1x2 stockpiles, one for food, one for drink
You'll have one open spot, which you could use for whatever.

Bed/Table/Chair/Chain should be of the highest quality possible.

The wall away from the door should be fortifications or glass/gem windows that look out over a meeting area.  This prevents vampires from escaping the consequences of dining on your prisoners.  You can also make the walls between the cells out of fortifications or glass/gem windows.

The OP has stockpiles in the prisons, they're just not being filled up for some reason.

I have also grappled with this problem, presumably a bug. Unfortunately I can't give you an answer beyond trying harder to get those stockpiles filled, as the above posters have recommended. Several of my forts have had a no water to prisoners rule, others seem to have no issues. My current fort has a well and 180 frequently idle dwarfs, and prisoners get taken care of.

edit: I now have a jailed spinner dying of thirst after being fed and watered once and then forgotten about. 60 idlers, safe water source and buckets.  :(

most likely ALL your buckets now contain both water and lye and can no longer be used for anything.

Use the 3x3 jail, but place the chain at the back wall and make the food stockpile a 2x3 size. Your dwarf cant reach all of the drinks, but since rearranging my jail the stockpiles are now properly maintained.

As for why the dwarves dont feed prisoners, its always been quite iffy but it may have something to do with urist mcwoodchopper taking the job from half way across the map, deciding he is too hungry to continue when he finally gets to the hopsital cancelling it, and then urist mcminer deciding to take up the task from the bowels of the earth, causing the same thing to happen ad infiniteum.

Try assigning 2 or 3 dwarves as full time medics (no other labours except from feed prisoners/wounded and recover wounded) and see how that goes.

The lye/milk bucket bug was fixed in May.

Its not been mentioned yet but its probable that food stockpiles LESS than a 2 x 2 size will not work properly. Dwarves refuse to fill them up, instead leaving empty barrel(s) but not putting any food or drink there. I have been wrestling with this bug since back in 40d.
1x1 stockpiles work fine so long as there are no containers. Drinks are a little harder since they have to be barrelled, but I got around this by putting one stockpile over the whole prison area and then removing individual tiles until I had something that looked like a bunch of 1x1 stockpiles but was one single stockpile. You could also use multi-level jail cells and reserve one floor for booze and another for food. While you can have one stockpile giving to multiple others now, it's still quicker to have one pile split up across rooms, especially if it's a lot of keypresses to get between the feeder stockpile and the prison stockpiles.

Is that 2x3 stockpile one that combines food and drink? What happens if it get filled with all food or all drink?

This was fixed in 2010, when dwarves started completing their current jobs before going for food/drink/sleep. The problem is getting them to take the job in the first place.

Ohhhh... Ok I set the prison stockpiles to Take from the main drink/prepared meals stockpile, that seems to be helping.

I'm using a design like this so each prisoner has 6 stockpile squares within reach, while having a table, chair and bed.

Holy Crap feeding wounded is a LOW priority job? That never even occured to me...so backwards.
I'm going to go reduce the job load of a doctor or two significantly.
