Trade depot link with minecarts
« on: August 12, 2012, 06:25:35 pm »

I keep seeing people referring to using a minecart to bring items to a trade depot, but for the life of me, I can't find any instructions on how to do it. I know how to set up the normal stockpile link routes for minecarts, but I just can't seem to get this right. What do I need to do to get a dwarf to load up a cart and just take it along the track to the trade depot?

What's probably done is a minecart that dumps items onto the center of a depot, so when you mark them for trade, a hauler can go back and forth really quickly and integrate all the stuff into the depot really quickly.

Timing could be an issue with dumping stuff right in the centre, as the trade depot doesn't count as a stockpile.

Dumping to the edge of the depot means five tiles between trips, which shouldn't be a problem unless you're trading binfuls of crafts but skipping the 'bins' part.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I dump just to the edge of the depot, and have a burrow enclosing just the depot and stockpile.

However for dumping in the middle of the Depot, you'll need to A) channel the space directly above the center of the Depot and use a dumping track stop to empty the cart in that direction. Or B) construct track in the air above the Depot, with a stop that dumps to the center of the Depot.

It also allows for the less scrupulous amongst us to drop other things on the depot. However, I use a sealed system to dump goods to the Depot. Trade goods are loaded at the workshop level, usually 20 or so levels, or however low magma occurs. Once it reaches either full, or a percentage, if it has to make multiple stops, say forging, stonecrafts, woodcrafts, depot. Each step uses a push order, pushing it into a powered roller which sends it up a rectangle. Each step is sealed by a pair of pressure plates, and a flood gate. The cart engages the first pressure plate just after the roller, then 110 ticks or so later it it's the second which closes the flood gate. At the top, it passes over a lowest friction dump stop, dumping to the side into a single tile stockpile, then drops down a spiral track back to the bottom. The Spiral track ensures there's no more than one ramp per level without a turn, to avoid the 3 ramp flight issue.
