The Carnivore Thread
« on: August 12, 2012, 02:02:21 am »

This thread will be dedicated to the general decision of what the various meats in Dwarf Fortress taste like. Hopefully much debate, resoning based on the habits of the creatures involved, and madness will be involved. This includes dwarf, elf and human meat. Be warned. So, Bay12, my question for you is, what does elf taste like? Texture? How is the meat structure and what is the best method of perparing it? That should be enough to start the !!FUN!!. Arrivederci!

Elf probably tastes similar to human, but has a more tender texture.  They don't work anything heavy like stone or metal, you see, and they have big animals to do a lot of the grunt work and hard fighting for them.  Their muscles just don't toughen up from regular use like a more worthwhile creature's would.

Treating it like veal might be most appropriate, though some would argue that it's more similar to pork and should be prepared thusly.

i wouldn't bother farming elves.   A meat animal needs to breed and mature quickly, or else be large enough that the long term investment in its care is paid off.  Elves aren't very big, and humanoids tend to grow up slowly.

Darn. Unless we can genetically modify them! Elfcows, anyone? But seriously, what other types of meat are there? I'm hankering for a slab of dragon myself. Probably a bit spicy though.

Dragon would probably taste like a VERY gamey fowl, since reptiles taste much the same. The meat in question would probably have a succulent undertone based on the dragon in question. If we are talking D&D, a Red dragon would probably have a a savoury, heavy, chicken, with elements of marbled fat. Think prime grade beef here, for the fat, but a decent bit tougher. A smoky, almost charred flavour should come on strongly therafter, ending with the deliscious aftertaste of barbecued meat. I'm not talking Grilled meat, I mean barbecued, real barbecue, when the meat has been given hours to slow roast and has that delightful taste suffed throughout it's being. Dragons in DF being firebreathers, should taste much the same.

It's two in the morning and now I'm hungry. I guess that's what I get for starting a carnivore thread. That said, I wonder what hydras would taste like? No clue, since going to sleep now. Happy carnivoring!

Assuming that DF's hydras are similar enough to the Greek/Roman hydras, they would taste somewhat like eel (since hydras are essentially giant multiheaded serpents).

hydra should have tough meat , very strong and hard to chew because of hydras muscular build . it should be roasted for a long time .

dragons should have tough and hard to chew meat too because they are big and they need big and strong muscles to hold their weight . dragon meat should be roasted for long time in big heat to make it the best for a human to eat .

I'm thinking dragon meat lends itself more to crock pot chili.  A good 8-12 hours in the pot should soften it right up, and you probably wouldn't need an external heat source, whatever residual elemental fire is in the flesh will handle the cooking for you.

I wonder what some of the cave creatures taste like...
Draltha meat? Voracious Cave Crawler ribs?
Better yet, do Plump Helmet people count as meat or plant?

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

i think most of the cave creature meat is flimsy and tastes like fish (has no exact taste) it is roasted lightly and good for soups .

i know it is not canivore question , but i cannot figure out how a plump helmet and other underground crops taste .

Underground crops are mainly fungus, lichen and moss.  Try eating some of those (NOT just any you find lying around) and you might get an idea.

I disclaim any responsibility if you just go outside and eat the first mushroom you find and end up killing yourself on a deathcap or destroying angel.  Try the mushrooms on a pizza or from your grocer's produce section.

What about merpeople? We already know how to farm those. I'm guessing that the top half would taste like really fishy human meat, and the lower cuts would taste like grouper or some other fish with thick and chewy meat.

Dralthas are probably like underground giraffes or elephant, but they eat mushrooms. So...sorta bland savannah animal with mushroomy undertones.
Voracious cave crawlers probably taste like bugs. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get them divided up into meal-sized edible portions, but I'm no entomologist. Nor etymologist.
Plump helmet men taste like plump helmets.
Plump helmets probably taste like slightly soggy, somewhat moist mushrooms. I imagine they'd have a more pronounced umami-ness.
Cave wheat is probably like dry, bland longland grass.
Sweet pods are like sugar or something mixed with mushroom tastes. Dwarven sugar- and syrup-making processes likely remove the mushroomy taste.
Quarry bush leaves probably taste kinda like spinach or lettuce, but tougher (until cooked). Rock nuts are probably kind of like peanuts, but a lot tougher and shelless (because they're so though they don't need shells). Quarry bushes are probably the base of the cavern ecology, feeding on rock and stuff.
