Definitely with the skinner boxes.  Its fun for awhile though if you don't let yourself get sucked in completely.  Right now, waiting for a large PvE patch before I try it again.

Hrm, I had heard it was... perhaps a little unpolished, but I wasn't aware it was so blatantly MMORPGish.

waiting for a large PvE patch before I try it again.

The stress test invite email makes specific mention of PvE backstory, so I suspect it's at least been tweaked. Last I heard it was only PvP and they were going for more of a pseudo-TF2 feel in the big overhaul they did, but honestly I lost sight of it entirely after... July?

Yeah.  I don't know when I last played was.  July-ish certainly.

Also, I signed up on a mailinator.com account, so...not really getting the email blasts :P

Yeah, PvP is still in, but I've honestly not even touched it. It's completely optional, but still a perfectly valid way of progressing in the game as well. The PvE was quite unpolished when I first started, but it's gotten a lot better and a lot more fleshed out. At the moment it's a bit of an invasion mechanic, with NPC invaders dropping in and stealing capture points from the players. These capture points don't do much at the moment other than provide a resupply point and a safe place to respawn, but that might change later. There's also the "thumpers" Which are basically drop pod mining machines which you call in onto ore deposits. They take between a couple and 5 minutes to fill up but attract a lot of wildlife as they work, which you have to defend it from. It used to be somewhat easy to protect one of the lower level ones by yourself, but that's changed. Now there really aren't too many solo opportunities, so you need to work together with other people to do most things. There are a few other things that occur, mini-missions that you can take as they appear near you. You're given map markers to most of them, or radio cues. Some are somewhat easy, others are incredibly tough and take a good 4 to 8 people to take on effectively.

If you haven't given it a try in a few months, it's definitely changed a lot. It still needs a bit more polish, but there is definitely a lot more substance there than there used to be, even in the relatively short time I've been involved.

On the up-side people will randomly join the defense of a thumper "for the EXP" because the resources themselves are less valuable in the long term.

I play this occasionally with a friend of mine. Not too into MMOs, but this one's movement options make it pretty fun.

Well, I feel like I managed to bug out the game already (never got a new mission after completing the "Find the robot by opening 3 monster closets" one), but having fun, actually. I have a terrible internet connection but play wasn't too bad.

Quests are fairly free-roaming.  They don't just hand them to you, you kinda have to go out and wander the world and find them.

(And don't go looking for ! above people's heads, it's not so overt either)

I logged back in just to check if this was the case. As soon as I logged in I got the "Mission complete" dialogue from the robot one including the scan hammer and stuff... and now I've got a new mission. So, I did manage to bug the game out!

Having played for a little while longer: dynamic events really suck for the purposes of quests. Plus, the number and position of dynamic events doesn't seem to be appropriate to the number of players? I got like... 4 chosen droppods and a chosen incursion while being the only person in a 1km radius. I mean, I can take out a few people, and have a decent ability to snipe as a medic, but, it's nonsense to give me a challenge like that when I'm alone.

You don't have to do those.  And they are pretty frequent, although I don't know how the game decides to generate one (I can tell you however, that they only happen in specific locations, and that if you see it in one place you can bet you'll see it there again in the future.  If you don't clear it out and just leave, it'll still be there for the next slchub to walk past.

Chosen Incursion...those are where they set up a base and it's freaking huge and has a glowy red thing?

I still have no idea how one makes it Go Away.  The mother ship has hit points, but it's also marked as invulnerable because something else needs to be done first, but I have no idea what.  Also, very deadly.  Don't assault those alone.  Or at all.

I believe those are actually "warbringers" or something of that sort. Seperate from the incursions. The warbringers have a sort of shield generator or something next to them (one of the pillars surrounding it) that needs to be killed first. But yeah, those are definitely team efforts unless you get one with a lucky sniping position like I did once. Took every shot I had with my rifle and I still had to run up and plink it a few times with my shotgun, but yeah... getting in for those last few hits was tough... and had it been more than 15 seconds or so, I wouldn't have lived long enough to finish it off.

So, having played for a little while and feeling pretty ok about the whole combat medic thing for the time being... what's the point? So far all I do is run around, killing mobs, maybe sometimes finding a good thumping spot and soloing it. But as far as I know I can't actually do anything meaningful with the stuff I get out of thumping, instead all it gets me is cash, and there are never any shops near me and they don't sell upgrades anyways?

Once you get to a T2 suit, you can craft those materials into better items.  Those unlocks you get are just stock.  Basic stuff.  Almost anything you craft with resources will be outright better.

For instance, on my dreadnaught suit I have armor that regenerates 20 hp a second, almost eliminating the need for a medic or health packs entirely.
(I could have gotten it to 22...if it hadn't been capped)

The stock version?  15 hp/sec.

The lower teir one was 1 hp/sec stock (but much more damage resisty than the above item), I crafted a 6 hp/sec version...and with better resists.
