Forest fires
« on: August 11, 2012, 10:14:56 am »

A firebreathing-camel-titan came to my site recently, but was killed by a gobbo ambush. The problem is, that the titan didn't only set the gobbos on fire, but also the surrounding grass. The fires have begun to spread, clearing the land of weeds but ignoring bigger plants completely. Does rain put out fires? Also, are the ashes that now litter the ground usable?

Spreading fire does not damage trees, saplings, or shrubs. After some time, the ashes will turn into normal soil and the grass should grow back.

I don't recall whether or not rain puts out fires.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The surface is starting to remind me of some old and terrible tales. Just ash and burning corpses everywhere. I hadn't yet cleaned up the latest siege.

You seem to be under the impression that we're playing some game other than dwarf fortress. It doesn't matter how powerful you make a creature, we will find a way to destroy it. God is dead, and Urist killed him.

I tested out some reactions that had a habit of resulting in building deconstruction and fire, and I never saw the rain put a dent in the spread of the flames.  If rain puts out fires, it won't do it fast enough to be meaningful.  At least fire can't travel down the Z-axis.  Huzzah for trenches!

I think rain only created water coverings on units and water if it hits a murky pool but has no result when hitting the scenery, not even if it's on fire

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Yeah rain didn't affect the fires. They burned all grass from an area surrounded by a dich, a brook and some cliffs. Are forest fires likely to set creatures alight?

Yes, very likely.

Dwarven construction plan:

Step 1: Magma Land mines.
Step 2: Sprinkler system.

Revised Post fire construction plan:

Step 1: Sprinkler system.
Step 2: Drown idiot who's bright Idea the landmines were.
Step 3: Magma Landmines.

If I expect fire breath, I pave. EVERYTHING. Of course, I also pave everything if I'm doing land mines, but it's the unexpected that  always gets you.

Luckily all my dwarves were inside, so they only had to wait a while before going out again. The fires apparently torched some other ambush squads as well, since there were unclaimed weapons laying around in the burned area. I have some fire-attacking pets, so I'll likely use this as a anti-siege weapon.
