Looks like i'm going to be making use of this in my next fort!
 now to devise a way of preventing animals from escaping the map, whilst allowing them to enter...

I had a human siege a while ago that I had to turtle from. They stuck around long enough that a couple of their camels and horse gave birth. The weird thing was as soon as the babies dropped the humans attacked them. o_O

Loyalty and animals are weird.

Invader animals give birth to wild animals (or maybe hostile?). I think this once led to goblins' cave crocodiles biting their babies to death when trapped in a well.

The newborns are classed as Hostile.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
