Reproducing wild animals?

As you have probobly read from the title, unless you cant read, in which case go back to kindergarden. Anyway, on a very old fort that I was livestreaming, i got a message that I had never got before.



My first thought was it annouced because it had twins, but I didint even know wild animal reporduction was possible, and plus I think I might have gotten a few more messages like this, but it was awile ago.

Another thing, I have no mods installed, and I had not discovered the caverns yet. When I zoomed to the location, it was just black.

I-I didint know this was possible! Once I got to the caverns, I was greeted by a happy Rutherer family.The version was 34.10 (I think). I apologize if this is common knowledge, but iv never gotten a message like this in all the time iv played DF, and I have heard a thread awile ago that claimed to have the same thing as me, but with masterwork. Also, just to clarify, I have no mods installed but the CLA texture pack. Has this happened to anyone else?

Does this mean that, in vanilla DF, wild animals can mate :o.

Was there anyone else down there?  Maybe they weren't wild, maybe they were tamed by a different civilization.

Wild animals CAN reproduce, but hardly ever on the map long enough to do so.

Somebody else recently had that. Apparently some rutherers got stranded in a section of the caverns for a long period of time, and ended up reproducing since they couldn't move off the map edge. They uncovered a lot of rutherers when they broke open the caverns in that section.

If so, it would have said "Rutherer, Tame,, ahs given birth to twins". Im 99.99% sure that they were tamed, as my guys attacked and killed them with no problem and I didint get a loyalty cascade or go to war with any of the nearby civs. Though I have had them as mounts in Goblin sieges, but still, im pretty sure they were wild.

I know, i was as suprised as you. I stopped int he middle of my stream to get this.

Only time I heard of this, the guy was shot down by a ton of people for using masterwork. The Ruthrers wernt stranded or anything either, they were just chilling, and I hadint even dicovered the caverns when I got the message. Your probobly right though, the only reason I got the announcment it because it was twins. What a disapointment

So wild animals can reproduce, if they can be forced to stick around for long enough?  Awesome.  Maybe I can make a giant game preserve after all.

Confirmed.
I had some capybaras dodge into one of my surface pools and couldn't get out, they bred until they started to evolve gills and breathe underwater......It was vanilla 34.06, (I think, might have been 05?) There must have been about 20 of them but each birth spat up a notification.

The Giant Moles in the caverns of my current fort breed like crazy, even while regularly being decimated by other beasts entering them...

Acetech09 hit this one on the nose.  Any animal capable of having offspring is able to do so when wild, but pregnancies only occur while on screen and only last as long as the animal remains on the screen (remember that once worldgen has stopped, your fortress is the only fertile place in the world; which explains why dwarves will still migrate there if it's a horrible death trap of a hole).

My personal tests indicate that this is valid for wildlife, but not captured invaders or semi/megabeasts (although due to a corrupted save, I didn't have a very long time with those two minotaurs to test this completely).  I have heard that invader's mounts are also capable of producing offspring, but these offspring will be recognised as attack targets for the mounts and will die if the pregnant creature is not already caged.  I have not been able to test this personally, however.

Keep in mind that the wild animals and their offspring still count as animals on the map, so you can only have a few different types penned up before the game says that there's too many types to generate any more.  This can be particularly useful if you want a map without annoying critters such as rhesus macaques or giant keas constantly pestering you and taking your goods.  Cage a few and toss them into a pit with a cover hatch and some windows or bars.  Quick zoo!  Just be careful as they can breed to higher-than-normal numbers.  I recall a save of mine where I let some reindeer get frisky for a few generations and they were enough in number to almost overwhelm a solid line of traps and a full squad of skilled dwarves.  Almost.

I can confirm that invasion mounts can give birth to offspring.  In my last fort I had a tame cave bear impregnate an invasion cave bear while it was sitting in my invader pit waiting for processing.  I didn't notice that it gave birth until after the bear cubs were ripped to shreds by some goblins also in the pit.

I remember having carp give live birth on my map two years back.

Fish still scare me.

Very good to know, Bartinyou!  Did the combat logs say anything about the mother bear attacking the cubs?

There was no combat log of the mom fighting the cubs, but I am not sure if the goblins gave her a chance.  Both of them died within 2-3 attacks.

This has been the case since at least 40d, though it was rarer then due to the exotic animals never breeding anyway unless you had a Dungeon Master.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
