So far i've managed to settle two levels underground and safely wall off(got all equipment down there, even managed to deconstruct wagon and chop some trees with only one casualty). Right now i'm trying to find a hole in the aquifer, but it seems that level 3 is completely flooded  >:(.

Yeah... not enough time to get through aquifer!

I gave up and ran another world and embarked w/ an anvil & copper nugget... funny thing, wagon deconstructed due to embarking on a large mountain, and so I have no wood for ash & charcoal.

Zombie Giant Grasshopper, in my case.
Then zombie dogs.
Then zombie dwarves.
One dwarf almost survived, they'd gotten almost all the stuff underground, he was underground. Everything nasty was on the surface. Unfortunately the doofus went and stood on the ramp up briefly, alerting the zombies above to his presence down below.
He fled to the back corner, zombie followed and ate him.

I managed to breach one aquifer level(yes, there are more!  :D), one of my 6 remaining dwarves drowned in the process, reanimated and FUN occured. It's hard to breach aquifer with so little wood. I managed to harvest only about 10 logs and that is not enough.

Is the aquifer on the whole map? If so would it be possible to channel around the edges of the map and collapse the whole thing into the aquifer? *Might require multiple embarks full of miners

If you're bored you can do something with me.

i.e take 2 seasons to a year each every 1-5 days (not sure how long you usually spend in doing an in game year).

I'm a bit noob, can sort myself out but currently been wiped by the first "major" ambush siege each time and i have no idea how to use traps :P so having some assistance of someone setting up traps and archer towers would be pretty cool.
Intended save is ~7 years into the world (started the fortress at year 5), no necros/undead. tonnes of boars/badgers keep wandering through, plenty of thieves, no ambush yet but probably coming soon.

Attempting the embark posted in post #2 looks a bit... frustrating if anything.

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

After a few frustrating attempts, I realized you had cave-ins disabled in d_init. Doh!

Yeah, the aquifer's across the whole map. There aren't any gaps.

OMFG SO MANY FUCKING FLYING CORPSES!!! I can handle those on the ground, but flyers just screw me over... GAH...
First it was a Owl that my Woodcutters took down quickly, then TREIPS swarm appear, what the hell is a Treips??? I am not even sure I am spelling that right. They won...
THEN A GIANT MOSSIE!!! It was alone, I thought good, get rid of that quickly. IT PROCEEDS TO SUCK THE BLOOD OUT OF THE DWARVES AS AN AUTO HIT!!!
Try again, TREIPS MEN!!!
AGAIN, TREIPS MEN!!!

Try again, oh good something different, WREN MEN!!!

Edit::

That was all you there, don't point any fingers at anyone else. You are just getting the Savegame file, no d_inits came with it...

Oh, that's right... no clue why I turned that off then. It was very helpful to have it on, though. Pierced the aquifers and have a lovely little fort going now, except for the lack of migrants. Going to be a challenge getting them in with reanimating giant thrips all over the place.

You have no caravans. No migrants. No surface. Always at risk of a zombie spiral. Indeed, a hard embark. You passed the hardest bit though. Surviving enough to get underground.

There also doesn't seem to be anything but galena, but I haven't dug to the magma sea yet, so there may be more... If it comes down to it though, I can at least get copper armor by melting and reforging the axes and picks, since they have 120% melt yield. Getting some leather is going to be important, though, for quivers... Hopefully there'll be an animal men tribe somewhere with some, as I really don't want to try butchering anything with only four dwarves left, and putting the crossbows and silver bolts to use would be very nice.

Why would you want quivers??? Peirce weapons are useless (or just very poorly effective) against undead. I mean seriously. If it wasn't for the speed that Bullets go at and their kentic energy that happens on impact, zeds would never die in the FPS...
Make Hammers/Maces. Make things go squish. Plus no severing of body parts leaving you with 100 It's running around on their fingertips causing your dwarves to panic at that moving hand...

Undead health is based on a point system, I believe, so weapons are generally equally effective. Getting a in a melee scuffle is also usually horrible against large numbers, as they'll just keep reanimating, whereas a dorf can run away while firing the crossbow if off duty. It'll definitely be needed for any kind of surface activity.

Though yeah, hammers are the preferred melee weapons, in my experience anyway. Their happiness has stabilized, so I've got two of them sparring now with silver hammers and full copper armor. I kind of cheated and used prospect with DFhack, and there's only galena after all. So now I'm generating copper and training up armorsmith/weaponsmith, with the goal being to equip them all in masterwork armor and weapons and then try and get some quivers. Long term, I'd like to build a tower from which I pump magma onto the surface, while shooting at corpses with crossbows, hoping to incinerate the zombies that are starting to build up before they reanimate. It'll be a challenge though, since so many enemies are fliers here.
