Murderous Danger room..
« on: August 10, 2012, 06:16:57 pm »

My danger room keeps a-killin me dwarves! I even took it down to 5 spears, of the lightest wood I have, yet still they are impaled upon the spikes! I had not this trouble in my last fortress. They keep getting 'lucky' hhots in the head. For some reason none of my dwarves will wear the helms I made them, which I think is the trouble. Yes, I assigned them to wear it. Why won't they?!

Training spears, not spears.

That's almost definitely your problem.

Do you have the uniform set to go over clothing or replace it? Are they wearing caps?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I know, they are training spears, but thank you.

its set to go over clothing, and yes, they have caps. Should I set it to replace?

Yes, though you can change it back as soon as they've got their helmets on if you haven't got many items in the uniform and would like the extra layers.

Caps are [SHAPED], helms are [SHAPED], and you can't have more than one of those in any one body slot. Caps are also a common clothing item, so it's common for them to block helms from being put on.

danger rooms are a great way to train.
However, if you don't have a hat, you'll never get...

I only ever had trouble with my Danger room if there were insufficient beds for my soldiers...

In that situation I discovered dwarves will occasionally take naps on spike traps...

They don't live through it.

Urist McRecruit slept uneasy due to noise lately. *clank, clank, clank...* (noise of the spears hitting his helm and breastplate.)

I'm pretty sure I've had dwarves sleep on top of danger room spikes in version 0.31.25 and survive without injuries. Then again, they were wearing full suits of masterwork steel armor...

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Do not forget hoods and cloaks - they are quite important to have too!

Same here, 34.11. They weren't even wearing the metal armor I told them to, so it was all robe, cloak, hood, and parry (???). Not sure how they parry in their sleep, but there you go. They even gain skill while sleeping. Let that hood turn XX, though, and the next headshot will kill them whether they're awake or not. That's why metal helms are absolutely required.

You've seen XqualityX items to be as good at blocking as unworn items?

Sometimes soldiers are very slow in putting on all of their gear. Picking up equipment seems to have a very low priority, so if they have a barracks they can train at they may go on duty and train in their barracks while wearing only a single boot, with the rest of the shiny masterwork steel plate just sitting around in bins while the recruits get brained from training spears.

Check to see if your recruits are actually wearing the gear that is assigned to them. If they are no wearing it, put them on duty, but do not give them any barracks to train at. Alternatively give the squad a station order so they stand around. This puts them on duty so they won't do anything else except pick up their equipment, then move to the stationed spot.

Something must've changed in 0.34, then, since whenever I enlisted soldiers in 0.31.25 they'd immediately put on all of their equipment before reporting to the barracks. Granted, they were also completely naked at the time, so there weren't any issues with clothing getting in the way (never had to set them to "replace clothing" instead of "over clothing", which seems to be an extremely common problem in 0.34.11).
