Good ISP Screwup

So we all have horror story about your internet service provider with bad service, failing infrastructure, instability and so on, but did you ever had a good ISP screwup? Let me explain what happent to me last month.

I get a salesman coming to my place to try to sell me the new optiv fiber connection, ultra-stable, fast, blabla. Problem is, the ISP company was the worst i ever saw so i wasnt really willing to try it and i had some money i had to pay them in the past since i broke a contract due to ... well... horrible everything. I tell him, if you get my old dept erased im willing to try it since its now without contract, i can cancel my service anytime with NO reason and NO drawback.

Techs come in, install the ahrdware, connect my computer. First week everything goes fine and friday ding and loose my connection. Call them, after a few hour of being trasfered and so on i finaly get my connection back, was a screw up from their side BUT they gave me the first month free due to the instability and trouble i was in. Now yesterday wich is 3 week after i got that new connection, i download a game from steam and realise i downloaded the game past my normal speed i was the heck o.O.

My connection is supposed to be a 50Mbits simultanous ( upload AND download same time still get the full 50Mbits both side ). Make my bandwith test...... 250 frigging Mbits download with 50Mbits upload, SIMULTANOUS!!!! for 60$ a month...... Crap worse ping i had on any FPS game was a 82 ping because the server was in germany and im in canada....

So did you ever had a good screw up from a company/ISP/anything?

We pay like $50 a month for 3 Mbps download and 1 up.

Apart from time warner ripoff inc. there's no one else in the neighborhood who can provide internet.

Oh, I have a gut feeling that wasn't a screwup. My ISP has a loveable tendency to double or even triple my speeds for a couple days, or even a week, if they do anything wrong. Like the one time they haven't even noticed I paid them like usual and cut me off for a couple hours, after which I called... Guess what, I'm magically running on 20mb/s. (That's the highest they provide in the region. And yes, megabytes.) Was nice.

Well its more the fact that they fixed their mistake by giving me a free month, and for no reason i get 5time the speed i wonder if it will stick because they NEVER did that in the past.

I got a new phone contract about three weeks ago. When I got the phone, the original simcard was faulty and only gave intermittent signal, so I got a replacement one. However, it seems that none of the usage that I have used on either simcards for calls, texts or data has counting - whenever I go to check how much I have remaining, the automated message tells me I have my full allowance left. I'm going to wait another month or two to be sure, but I think I may have unlimited usage.

However, there is a bit of bad news that has just emerged. I got a text from them saying that my bill was going to be deducted soon, and the text said they were going to charge £9.50 instead of the £7.50 I signed up for. I'm wondering whether calling them would be worth the risk of possible losing my free unlimited usage.

EDIT: Actually, while this is up here, does anyone have any advice on whether or not it would be worth kicking up a fuss? If I call, are they likely to notice, and if I stay quiet are they likely to try and charge me for the usage? I haven't yet gone over the allowance I should have, so hopefully I can avoid charges there if they try to get me to pay for extra usage.

While I agree that TW can be a ripoff, they will also work with you.

In June I cancelled our cable, and they took forever to come out and disconnect it. As I was still on the book for the cable payment until they did so, I was a bit frustrated. They missed four appointments to come and do the disconnect.

I called many times, and eventually said that I would be looking elsewhere for Internet due to their poor service unless they drastically reduced my price. My reasoning was that a new provider would give me an introductory deal.

They offered me a free upgrade in speed for six months, which I said no to. Then they said they would take $5 off my Internet every month. I asked if they could do better. Then they finally offered me the same speed I have now (10 up 1 down) for $42/month (was paying $68 or so).

I agreed, they apologized about the cable service and said it was free until they came and cut it (which happened yesterday). Moral of the story: if you are polite, persistent, and willing to actually take your business elsewhere, even a big company like TW can give you a deal.
