Rutherer has given birth to triplets
« on: August 09, 2012, 11:27:59 pm »

In my latest fortress, I have been periodically receiving a message that Rutherer's are giving birth to twins or triplets. I can zoom to the location via the unit screen and it appears to be in a deep cavern which I have not yet breached. I already know that the only option for me is to dig deep and make judicious use of cage traps, what I want to know is has anyone else encountered a similar event?

I'd take care of it sooner rather than later, otherwise you're gonna have a rutherersplosion down there.

And you thought cats were bad.

O_o?

Rutherers are usually transient creatures.

Do you by any chance have a civilization of animal men who've tamed rutherers beneath you? A rutherer lair (I don't think they lair, haven't ever seen one mentioned anywhere or in any history)

There is a tribe of amphibian men, but they hate me and were on a different cavern level. The rutherers turned out to be on a section of the caverns that was surrounded by rock and water giving them no way to exit the map, which is presumably why they stuck around long enough for me to get messages that they were reproducing. I caught all but two of them in cage traps, the hunters got two of the children before I turned off their hunting labors.

I have successfully captured:
4 adult female Rutherers
2 adult male Rutherers
10 female Rutherer children
8 male Rutherer children

The Rutherers were terrified of my civilian dwarves, and they basically just congregated around my cage traps. Only one dwarf got killed during the process.

And with a little raw modding, they can do anything.

Give them can_speak /can_learn so that they start making friends and level up social skills ^_^

Rutherers cannot be war trained. They should still make a half decent defensive force since even a rutherer child is bigger than a grizzly bear.
If I wanted I could put the adults back on the island and separate them with mechanisms until they revert back to being wild, but I'd rather keep the original adults in my fort in a trained state.

Good for meat production. High quality, and a lot of it.

Once I had a rutherer explosions, my meat stocks almost reached 10000 units.

I've had it happen once or twice. If you have twisty passages in the caverns and leave the caverns alone long enough, eventually the trees will start blocking the passages.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Then you get a rutherer mayor, then the rutherers gain political power. Before you know it you're running a fortress filled with rutherers who have enslaved the dwarven race. They'll start spreading, enslaving all the dwarven sites, due to their large size and slave armies they'll take out the other nations. They wont care about resources they'll just take it all. The seas will run red, the land will become barren.

Congratulations, you just created hell on earth.  :P
