The mystery of the self opening doors...
« on: August 09, 2012, 10:36:48 pm »

So I had 3 zombie dorfs locked in a room for 2 seasons.  Mid-fall the door magically unlocked itself and they wandered out.  At the same time various other doors began unlocking themselves.  How the hell did that happen?!  I now have an army of zombies in my fortress and my population dropping like flies.  WTF?!

It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Perhaps a sneaking necromancer or kobold/goblin thief with lockpicking abilities?

If you've breached the caverns, it could very well have been a gremlin.

Nope, nothing along those lines on the unit list.  Infact it's gotten to the point where I'm watching them walk through locked doors which then change to "unlocked".  Can ghosts unlock doors?

Sneaking units don't show up on the lists or are viewable, until someone finds them.

I'll go with Kobold, gremlin or goblin master thief. All can arrive ambushing and can pick locks, and you can even track their whereabouts with the gratuitous application of door spam. Doors should stay open for a few ticks before closing, meaning you should be able to track down and kill whatever is being a nuisance.

Oh and bring a few military Dwarves, daggers can fubar a lone dwarf.

Goblin thieves cannot pick locks - only LOCKPICKER creatures (i.e. kobolds and gremlins) can do that.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Really? I've had a goblin master thief make it past locked hatches before

They'd have been detected by now for sure.  I'll upload a pic of the place in a bit so you know what we're dealing with, but there's dorfs there in close quarters along wish the zombies.  There's no way for anything to sneak past.

Back before the game went 3D, goblin babysnatchers were 100% undetectable while sneaking into your fortress and could easily sneak through a large group of dwarves and war dogs (while kobolds would be easily spotted), only becoming detectable once they had captured a child and were trying to escape. Granted, it hasn't been like that for a long time, but you never know when Toady might reintroduce that behavior...

So it turns out any dwarf that wasn't burrowed was capable of opening locked doors.  I don't know how they did that, but it has to be some sort of glitch.
