Brass artifact mail shirt
« on: August 09, 2012, 09:09:52 pm »

This is my first post on these forums, and I have not been able to find any similar threads on the subject. Urist McFarmer, a dwarf with a single point in armorer decided to go into a fey mood and created an artifact brass mail shirt. I can't find any posts about brass armor ever having been created and am trying to find out if this thing is worth using or not.

For future reference, what stats in the raws determine how armor functions? The wiki isn't exactly clear on that... ???

I'm not sure on stats, but I'm going to guess that brass will be at most as effective as bronze/iron.

If what he said is true, its is automatically valuable, because of the huge stat boost granted by artifacts.

Artifact gear is 3 times as effective as base material. I would wager that slapping that on your best melee dwarf is a good idea.

Well, I have access to bronze and can easily churn out masterwork mail shirts, but the concern is whether a masterwork bronze shirt would be better than an artifact brass shirt.

good job sticking a moodable skill on your farmer man, people need to learn to do that more. Then you might just get lucky and get a decent weapon/armour piece, as well as a legendary weapon/armour smith.

To be honest, as already stated brass will probably be about as effective as masterwork bronze, but artifacts give a slight deflection bonus compared to masterwork items. (1.3x over 1.2x IIRC).

It's chainmail, not a breastplate though-- so you might want to ditch it when you have a masterwork iron or steel breastplate, which shouldn't take long since you now have a legendary smith. Consider giving it to one of your marksdwarfs, because it's still pretty useful even then and the low weight should mean he doesn't get slowed down as much, even with low armour user skills.

my last artifact was a bloody toy boat with my expedition leader on it. Gold with some low quality gems and wood decoration.
Thanks, urist McStoner. Don't worry about drawing the goblin sieges ever closer before I've even finished trapping the main corridors, no-sirree.

No, you wear an artifact steel chestplate OVER the artifact mail shirt. You can, infact, wear three chain mail shirts, a helm, six hoods, 6 cloaks, trousers, leggings, high boots, socks, shield, weapon. Possibly more. 3 leather robes, six cloaks, and 6 hoods is excelent light armor, actually.

Maybe you should reward him with some of those stones he loves so much. By this I mean stone him to death.

one sock, one low boot, one high boot six cloaks and no pants. Pure dwarven fashion.
Did toady re-implment dungeon masters yet?  8)

Yeah, forgot you could wait mail under a breastplate, my bad. I don't stack armour. Everyone gets one suit of armour, one leather or silk underlayer a cloak and a hood and if they don't like it they get demoted back to cheesemaker

edit: he's currently part of my Zombie defence initiative. Meaning, he's eating my enemies. Far more useful than he was in life, at any rate.
Still, for all my procrastination it's a pretty nice little boat. :/

I have no idea where ideas like this come from.

There is no "stat boost" associated with artifacts, whatever that's supposed to mean.

Regarding "3 times as effective as base material": No. It gets triple the deflection bonus of the same item in base (no adjective) quality. That doesn't necessarily mean it's "3 times as effective", because the material statistics of the item still matter a lot and there's no way to make up for that.

I thought that was implied. Rainbow trout bone armor is still pretty useless, for instance.

I think it's actually true with weapons, as higher quality brings their sharpness closer to [MAXEDGE]. Perhaps that's where the idea came from?

Yeah, Toady has implied that weapon sharpness gets closer to MAXEDGE with quality, although it's already at 100% at Masterpiece, so no benefit there from an artifact specifically.

Just did some arena tests with some brass. Doesnt seem to be very effective, don't know how much the artifact quality will help it. I would say that even -steel- will be plenty better than the arti brass.
