95% Common Sense + 4.9% Microsoft Security Essentials + .1% Ad-Block = Running Fine

MalwareBytes + Spybot Search&Destroy = Removal Tools (I havn't had to do this for any of my acquaintances for the past few months...)

Yeah, nowadays anybody with $20 can grab a virus off hackforums that's fully undetectable and spread it. AVs don't help as much as they used to, if you use nothing else, use common sense.

Bolded for emphasis. The best way to keep your machine clean is to be smart about the software you install and the websites you visit. Honestly some antivirus options might as well be considered viruses themselves the way they can mess up your system.

I've had virus attacks come from completely innocuous websites, once even from, of all things, the Mass Effect Wiki. Common sense isn't always enough.

Can't be helped, regardless of 'good sites' sometimes having viruses and stuff, common sense will still take you further then you could have without it.

Perhaps an ad-blocker may have helped there?  That is if the attack originated from the website itself or from an ad on that website.  I always have ad-block on...   and if you use firefox/mozilla... no-script may help too.  Also yea...  simply don't use IE if you could help it.

Can you elaborate on that cause i don't believe Mass Effect wiki would be infected unless hackers got into the server and dropped malicious code. More likely advertising did it. NINJAD

I use ABP and Ghostery now, but I didn't at the time. I think No-Script is a little bit paranoid, though, and coming from someone as paranoid as me that says something.

I use Avast! and malwarebytes. Avast IS really good at clearing out viruses, while MalwareBytes takes care of the rest.

Alright, what you probably got from the Mass Effect wiki was a java driveby. It works like this: An advertiser uses java in completely innocent ads until it gets approved with whatever advertising service their using. Then they add more code to the ads that creates a popup in the background that you can't see. Most of the time its one of those things authorizing a download. This popup moves as your cursor does, so the next time you click, you will be clicking both on your browser and in the hidden popup, authorizing the download or what have you. The only real way to block it is to disable Java by default, and stick to sites you trust.

Yeah, Java is particularly awful with regards to security. I leave it disabled unless there's a specific applet I want to run.
