Actually if you try to look at things objectively rather than in a way that fallaciously asserts that "I like DF, ergo I am smarter than most people", you'll realize that it's really just the UI that keeps it from breaching too deep into the fantasy themed strategy/sim singleplayer gaming niche, which is already basically a tiny fraction of videogaming in general.

I get what you're trying to say, but your logic doesn't actually follow the way you think it does ("a lot of people are dumb" -> "things a lot of people like are dumb") doesn't add up and it makes you look silly.

A better way of putting it is simply stating the plain truth:  A lot of people really aren't going to want to put the effort into learning a game as complex as DF.  That's fine.

But that doesn't mean we should pre-emptively push people away.

Well I definitely agree on this one.

I mean maintaining a feeling of exclusivity to the group shouldn't override making it any bigger.

But I have witnessed some truly vitriolic debates in other game forums... actually now that I think about it the worst forums I've been on all had multiplayer games associated with them. And the MMO I played at one time had one of the worst. This lessens my worries significantly.

That was what worried me, not to name any threads but the last people who suggested expanding DF's fanbase accidentally invited a wave of scat spam onto bay12. Someone has to be the paranoid one you know...

So yea, there really is no problem putting DF out there, since most people won't bother to try it anyways cause of asci... despite an awesome presentation and most of those who would try it will quickly fall off thanks to the UI and difficulty.

Those who are left... they are the chosen few... to carry the legacy forward into a new day and age...

The majority of the public isn't intelligent.
Things that appeal to the majority of the public are mainstream.
Therefor mainstream things appeal to the unintelligent.

This logic is based on a false premise, so it's unsound.

Yes it's already been addressed. I'm just going to go edit that out now.

I decided to play DF on my own accord, because im the kind of person that likes this game, and most people arnt like me
i bet ur sooper speshul

I can't stand people going like "most ppl arnt lik me" or whatever. There's no way to make it sound good.

I know, I explained it wrong, but I guess what i was trying to say was that most people don't like this game, I was just using that as an example..... ish. Though it is slightly true, you would think that if more people like me, or you, or anyone else that plays DF, that it would have a bigger fanbase.

Dwarf Fortress is an exemplary indie game and thus i do not doubt it could win the prize, however it is a game that is constantly in development, thus every single iteration of it could be in my opinion a viable candidate for the indie game competition so it would be weird to have the same game win the prize multiple times.
