Entry isn't free you know. It's a $95 fee and if he did anything there he would have to go to their ceremonies and stuff. And DF is too far outside of the usual paradigm to be super likely to win or even get a ton of attention, I think. I don't really believe it's a good investment of time and money for Toady.

Pardon my sounding like a hipster, but mainstream attention tends to have dire consequences for small communities in the short run... Sometimes permanently.

Nothing Hipster about it, it is legitimately what happens when a small community suddenly get's a lot of popularity.

How does the hipster comment relate to dwarf fortress?

Dwarf Fortress has had multiple main stream publications.

And the Bay12 Forum is small?

Dwarf Fortress can't really have quite as big a surge as many indie games for one simple reason:

Its UI is designed by a programmer, I.E, things are organized by their similarity to each other in the code as opposed to in function. This is unintuitive as hell.

Yeah, if the newspaper articles, museum exhibit, and the fact that pretty much anywhere on the internet will instantly know what you're talking about if you mention Boatmurdered doesn't count as mainstream, I'd like to see the definition.

DF has already been submitted to IGF awards in the past anyways, and the game has been honorably mentioned during the top ten picks.

We're in the mainstream. But nobody's* got the balls or brains to play this damned game... which is just fine by me.

*Except the small number of people who play it

Baisicaly building upon what acetech said, trying to show someone who has never played this game, and/or is used to other games, this game, is next near impossible.  Most games, that most people play, shoot things in your face and require a minimal amount of thought to see whats going on. DF takes that, and slowly rapes it. When something happens, its you who comes up with the plot, how it went down, how you feel toward the dorfs, and how you treat them.

Its hard to explain really, so il just try to shorten it. DF is unlike any well-known game that most people play, to the point that people are just scared to play it because its so unusual to them, and because they arnt used to having to use their imagination, skill, etc, so much in a game.

One last attempt at explaining well. I decided to play DF on my own accord, because im the kind of person that likes this game, and most people arnt like me, and are used to judging a game by how much brown and muscles it can simulate. Alot of people know about DF, just like a few thousand play because its their type of game. And its so different then most other peoples type of game, that they dont get near it.

I have a feeling I explained that horribly, its just really hard to put out there, but whatever.

I think the simply explanation is that we like the community how it is. Most of the people here are kind, friendly and ever so slightly mentally damaged to just the right amount of crazy awesomeness.

Adding your average Joe to this would ruin our happy little community and turn it into a plain old internet forum with terrible spelling, insults flying left, right and center and about 95% of the population being trolls and spambots, just like any other forum.

Ah yes, the IGF, bulwark of the mainstream masses.

Are people really worried that attention from indie gamers/devs, a ton of which already know about about DF, is going to bring down some sort of plague?  I mean, DF has been mentioned in nationwide publications that people pay money for.  I am certain that The New York Times has a thousand times as much coverage as the IGF.

The general theory is that the learning curve is so intense and harrowing a journey that most idiots can't make the trip all the way to the end.

The majority of the public isn't intelligent.
Things that appeal to the majority of the public are mainstream.
Therefor mainstream things appeal to the unintelligent.

Honestly DF can be as popular as it wants to be, just keep the horrendous (but beautiful) UI.

EDIT: WAIT A SEC! I'm sure I've seen this before... hold on a second...
