Im confused about something... Care to give me advice?
« on: August 09, 2012, 01:04:00 pm »

Seeing as i dont know any other way to describe it, ill just tell the tale,

So my aunt tells me that I move around alot in my sleep, One night she came to tell me goodnight while i was sleeping, she said I hadnt been moving at all except what was usual (Breathing) When she patted me lightly saying "good night," she said that as she left, I started moving around, for a good five minutes straight, and that apparently I was trying to say something, but it was inaudible to her, I dont know what any of this means, care to explain what this is to me? Because its driving me up walls, some nights i wake up with new cutts and scratches, other nights i feel really tired even though i just slept... is it bad?

Sleepwalking maybe, if its really serious and you move around a lot and do complex actions.

An alternative is that you are just having a bad dream and thrashing around a bit. And sometimes you get a better nights rest, and a worse one at other times. Its quite natural not to remember small bouts of waking up and then falling asleep again, which leads to being more tired.

People just do things while sleeping. Turning sides, mumbling to themselves, scratching themselves. Personally I wouldnt be concerned unless its common and you actually do something.

My aunt says i sleep perfectly calm until she either opens the door to my room, or the door was open and she comes into tell me goodnight... she thinks its might be some trauma or something. im not entirely sure if there isnt anything traumatic that happened in my life that would cause me to this. also i flinch, ALOT.

How would your aunt know if you sleep calmly while she isnt around?

My guess is that she manages to wake you up a bit so you are in a muddled state where you are still dreaming but arent paralyzed. Or you have very vivid dreams or something. Has she ever woken you up during one of the bouts, and do you remember dreaming of anything?

She's disturbing you whilst you sleep.

When I lived with my ex I'd be sat up in bed watching telly whilst she slept, if I moved around or something she'd start mumbling in her sleep. I could almost make her do it on command by moving or something. The fact your Aunt does something and you start mumbling seems to point to this being the cause..

Nothing to worry about imo.

I once had a conversation with my brother while asleep.

It was just him saying "Are you asleep?"
And (sleeping) me replying "No."

Like five times.

Agree with everyone else here... If you get disturbed at certain points of your sleep cycle, you can react without waking entirely. Nothing to worry about.

Yes, it's pretty natural and probably fairly common too.  My brother talks in his sleep all the time.  It's sometimes coherent, usually not.  Unless someone does happen to see you sleepwalking or doing other dangerous stuff while sleeping, I wouldn't be too concerned.

I also get scratches and bruises during my sleep, and people that sleeps with me tells me that i sometimes mumble, sit and open my eyes during sleep.
i guess it's just a reaction.

My wife does this, its nothing to worry about. You incorporate external stimuli into your dreams as you sleep, so that innocent pat or the sound of the door opening may have become something terrible or frightening in your dream.

I have entire conversations in my sleep, both with those in the same room and those in my dreams. When I was living in Central America, I even sleep-talked in Spanish.

While it's normally nothing too much to worry about, the cuts and bruises are odd. Try asking your aunt to stop disturbing you when you're already in bed, and maybe try relaxing a bit before trying to fall asleep. Stress is a major factor in restless nights. Also look around your bed and make sure there's as little stuff to bruise or cut yourself on, as the pain may be agitating you even more.

I have something that has (stupidly) been labeled as a "disorder" called Restless Leg Syndrome. I have it even in the earlier stages of my sleep. I imagine I look a lot like a dog while dreaming and chasing a dream rabbit. Regardless of how silly I probably look, all of the women I've been with have learned to live with it. And on the plus side my calves are super toned.  ;D

I had similar when I was younger. I kicked a hole in the wall in our old house when I was asleep, at the age of 8, while completely asleep. I woke up and found I had my foot in the wall. Barefoot kick too.

Nowadays my sleep is almost exactly the opposite. While I don't stop breathing, my breathing slows to a very low rate (I'm a very naturally calm person) and my movement is almost nil.

Those I have slept in the same bed as in the past have noted that they often think I have died during the night. No obstructive sleep apnoea or anything, just a low breathing rate. (I'm very fit with regards to endurance; while I can't run very well given supplies I could walk quite a huge distance without stopping - current record is 28km.)

Now, regarding your thing, DwarfOfDefeat, as my esteemed colleagues have said- the easiest way to alleviate this is getting your aunt to stop disturbing you during sleep.
