Nooooo... However scorpions can smack your dwarves over the head with their own weapons, also neurotoxin.

So?  GCS has neurotoxin and don't need any training (or weapons) to be deadly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sorry, but in a fight a Giant Desert Crossbow Scorpion would utterly decimate a GCS

I'd be interested in seeing some results from an arena test....not that I don't believe you, the range of a crossbow is much greater than that of gobs of webbing being shot everywhere.

Hm, only thought spider venom paralyzed, leading to death through suffocation-- Scorpion venom causes necrosis in the brain and nerves...
Of course, webs will pretty much screw with anything...

TESTING TIME, GO! :D

In all the close combats I've seen with the GCS's, they bite first, second bite to inject poison, third bite rips off the head.  I don't know whether the poison even has time to work.
Although the battle with the giant green tree frog did take much longer and involved four GCS's - my weaver was busy for months collecting the webbing.
I currently have the GCS's pastured on the roof of the fortress, shooting their webbing at the keas, mothmen and other fliers that seem so interested in the expanse of obsidian tiling.  Also keeps the butcher busy.  VERY busy.

preliminary testing indicates Webs give a massive advantage (well I never ::) )

However it seems GCS are more fragile than scorps-- GCS webbed the first one, bit and injected venom twice, and bit off two legs and a foot-- Scorp gets free, attacks from behind, biting two legs off and the GCS died.

Unfortunately I messed up the settings-- One scorp shot another in the heart.

Not seeing many Scorps stings, though.

Interesting.
Is this one-on-one or small groups?

To me neither seemed more fragile.
Webs make even bronze colossus helpless. But dragonfire is kills spider in one turn. And three untrained recruits with only a helmets and axes will live long enough to have a few opportunity strikes and have spider bleed out.

... or he got hauled to the refuse pile, or got buried in a pet coffin?  Carve a memorial and dedicate a room to his honor.

No I only have one coffin and I checked the refuse pile as soon as he went missing. Anyway when I zoomed to the corpse from the stocks screen it should go to the location of the corpse not the location of death. That's why I concluded something bugged and he vaporized.

I can beat BOTH the GCS and the GDS.
Scorpion-shaped forgotten beast which has webs. Or fire.

So if I put Giant cave spiders on top of really tall towers around my fort, I could have them web fliers causing them to explode in a hilariously gravity orientated fashion?!!

Can you order Gremlins around like a Dwarf or can you only pasture them like a pet?

You should really dump a few in water, they'll multiply. Although don't do it on an ocean embark or else you'll get fps death. Also keep them out of bright light, especially sunlight!

....Now I want to mod mogwai into the game.

I started with that, but found that the fliers had migration paths from one side of the embark to the other, so only one area was busy, I guess the fliers I get don't have [MEANDERER] or some such.
Just pay attention to where the fliers go and station your GCS's accordingly.  I need to buy some brown recluses to see if they can do the same thing.

I've also had gremlins turn up as pets of migrants, they generally last until winter, then the river freezes, they can't get water, unable to figure out how to use the well, their master is busy at work, then they die.

Such is {digital}life.
