How do i know if a book has the secrets in it?

How do i know if a book has the secrets of life and death in it, before reading it.

I am in a sticky situation with 20 zombies around me, and a halberd stuck in my upper arm, i am sitting on a pile of books, and i fear that i only have time to pick one book up before they kill me, so might aswell get the right one!

it will say it has the secrets to life and death in the description.

Or it will tell you that you cant read, if you can't, you know, read.

I thought the secrets of life and death were only written on stone tablets?

The deities write the stone tablets, like with moses.
But then the people who gets those tablets, get all creative and starts to write tons of books, and books that refer to other books, and books that refer to books that refer to books and ect. And that can create some hilarious situations, like a book called "Death: My only mistake"

Anyway, the point is that in their eager to write tons of shitty books, they sometimes let out the secret in their writing.

Or you could get a deity to write a boatload of books off themselves and do that also. though it's rare and possibly safer than hitting up a temple.

Those Dieties tend to be immigrants from HFS though. Actual dieties only rarely communicate with others, generally by smiting them with vampirism.

The books with the secrets of life and death TYPICALLY contain these words:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You can easily check this by looking it up in the raws, under text.
