Don't badmouth Citadel paints too much. I have a really awesome-looking dwarf painted with those. I just wish I had a decent camera to take a picture of it.

Well I think most Golden Demon submissions have to be painted with like 60% GW paints (or some other arbitrary number) for elligablity. So they're not bad paints. It's more that they're GW expensive and the design of their containers is a bit poo.

This I tend to agree with.

My problem with GWS paints, other than the terrible pots and the price, is that I feel like I have to fuck with them every time to get the effect I want. Even getting as much excess off the brush as possible, it feels like it applies way too thick and fills in all the detail spaces. I always look at GD pieces and wonder how they get GWS paints to look like that. And my guess is that many contest winners use the bare minimum of GWS necessary and use far more inks and washes than base coats.

I do really like GWS Inks though, they are really nice.

On the Kickstarter.....I find it all kind of confusing. So I have to pledge the amount the paints would cost ($36 ish) to be able to get them? Or do I pledge more once the Kickstarter has ended and they send out their survey for what optional rewards I want? I have to say, as awesome as it all is, it's horribly laid out, which is probably due to them basically pushing their existing inventory through Kickstarter.

If someone could explain I'd appreciate it, as I don't want to miss the chance at $1.50 per bottle of paint. I pledged $15 already, does that mean I either need to pledge to $60ish to get the paints...or agree to pay another $35 once the Kickstarter ends?

You pledge $1 to eligibility for the paint/miniature package deals, then when you checkout you select the options you want and it modifies the total charged.

Also, fire elementals just got added to the vampire package and the bones line when it goes retail.  Hot shit!
Next is four huge dragons!

I must be incredibly dense, but when I checked out I saw no options for adding anything. It was just the standard KS reward page and then it sent me over to Amazon to confirm it.

ok wait I think I got it....you pledge to a level then ADD to your pledge the amount of the paint sets. That's.....really confusing and terribly laid out, IMO. How do they distinguish between someone who wanted to over pledge and someone who is pledging just for paints? Ah well.

I've not used GW paints in like a decade so I can't really speak to that. Do you mean they need like a huge amount of thinning to be useable?

I don't really follow the GD awards in any real detail, but people must be able to get good results with the GW paints. I mean they generally have nice looking minis in the codexes and stuff (that tyrannid with blu-tac in all the joints not withstanding). I guess you just have to get used to them?

Yeah, I generally find the paints waaaayyyy too thick to start out with.

There's a technique to getting figs to look the way GWS does them. I've read and followed many GWS painting tutorials and I think you have to be a really good painter to make their paints show that way. I also hardly ever use clear-coat.

Also the figs pics in the Codices are digitally cleaned up.

Clear-coat? Is that varnish? Because if you hardly ever use varnish then you're either a madman or only paint display pieces. :P

Yeah, I haven't really taken my figs or terrain to table in years. But I still paint and make terrain because it's an awesome past time.

Generally though I don't like the shiny effect it gives it. I like my models with a flatter finish. But I should start experimenting with it.

I'm not sure if we're going off-topic by discussing GW paints, or not :P

If we're talking about them to elucidate why Reaper Master Series paints are so awesome, I think we're on track.

Nenjin, check out either Testors Dullcote or Army Painter anti-shine varnish. I don't think they protect as well as gloss coat, and a lot of people suggest doing a layer of gloss and then a layer of matte varnish, but it sounds like exactly what you're looking for. Basically it's non-shiny varnish. There's probobly other brands, but I mention these two because Testors is what everyone and their mum recommends, and Army Painter is what I use because it's what my local game shop carries (and works great).

Also I think since the thread is about a miniature kickstarter, discussing anything related to mini painting and modelling should be ok?

I really am considering this, but I am not very big on fantasy miniatures. However, the value is staggering! Tough decision. Also, this thread got me back into painting 40k figures today and citadel paints do just fine but you HAVE to use black primer and HAVE to utilize dry brushing.

Which reminds me, I need to go spend some of my paycheck on new brushes. (Particularly a dedicated one just for dry brushing.)
