Black Primer? Boooo! White Primer is the best primer!

White primer is what I used on my dwarf. I can't compare it to black due to lack of painting experience, but it worked out pretty well.

It comes down to which look you prefer, IMO. White primers make all your colors pop, black primer subdues them. When using GWS paints, I'd always use black primer. When I switched to Ral Pathra/Reaper, I started basing in white.

I love white primer.  Also, Testor's Dullcote is the greatest thing ever.  Quick and dirty painting + minwax wax/varnish + dullcote = acceptable quality figures for gaming in 5 minutes each.

Well I was mostly joking there. THey're both good for different things. If you're painting something like a space marine, or anything that's going to be mostly black anyway, then black primer is usefull. It's also really good for hiding any mistakes you make, as a patch of bare black primer is a lot less noticable than bare white. If you aren't paying attention and assemble something then realise there's parts of it you can't reach because theres a part in the way... Well black primer is much more forgiving.

However it's kind of a pain to paint white, red, yellow, and various other colours on black. And generally you'll have to work pretty hard to get as vibrant a colour as if you were painting onto white. If you're going to be painting something that's mostly white, like this:
 

then you want to use white primer.

I pretty much always use white, unless im painting something mechanical like a tank or warjack or something. Also you can buy primers in most any colour nowadays, so if you were painting a Blood Angels army, for example, you can just grab some red primer and half your work is done for you right from the get go.

I don't think I'm sold on using a primer coat as a base coat. Particularly if you want to do anything fancier. When you ink wash stuff, it really brings out the paint underneath it. To me the difference is pretty glaring, even if when you've got the primer coat next to selected pieces that get a base coat.

Eh, certain primers are better at it than others I guess. I wouldn't do it unless I was painting a whole army. Just prime them, wash, highlight, and you're done.

White primer with a sepia wash or ink has given me really good results for certain things. Blonde hair works pretty well that way.

Maybe I'm making things unnecessarily difficult, but I usually prime, base coat in a diluted color I want + a 1/2 drop of white paint, then go over most of it with the unmodified color, then once more over parts of it with diluted base + 1/2 drop of black, then wash with a black or brown, then drybrush, then minwax, then dullcote, then detail and touchup drybrush.  Then maybe dullcote again depending on how much detailing was done.

I'm new to the hobby, so there's a good chance that I'm overdoing things to achieve an average result.  But I'm very happy with some of the figures I've done.

Whatever works dude. What techniques you use depends a lot on what kind of model your painting and what kind of effect you want. Everyone has their own methods and techniques.

Personally I usually prime, do base coats starting at the middle colour I want for an area, then shade the recesses down with either a darker mix of that colour or washes/inks, then highlight the raised areas with a lighter mix of that colour, then hit the details. But as I said, it depends a lot on the model. At the moment I'm painting a Khador war dog, so there's a lot of the model that's just basically base coated in one colour as the whole back half of the dog has no armour. So I'll probobly spend more time washing and maybe drybrush a lighter colour on his back over a few layers and see how it looks.

Though I tend to take ages on models, as I never really plan out what I'm doing. I just like to sit down, put a film on, and start painting. Usually this means I'll try something, fuck it up, and have to fix it and start over. At the end of the day, as long as your happy with the finished result that's all that matters.

By the way, if you've pledged at the vampire level or higher, you should spread the word!  Surprisingly few forums are aware of this KS, and the more dough is raised the farther and farther our $100 will stretch.  Plus, I think I would just die if I don't get to at least see what is in that final mausoleum.

I am thinking of finding a way to make my own miniatures somehow.

Even if they are something as cheap as printing a picture onto some photopaper and pasting it onto a stand.

Hmm... do picture stand miniatures exist?

Oh yes, they definitely do.  You can purchase stands from board game manufacturers from a site like coolstuffinc.com, or from your local game store (usually).  I know there are a ton of freely available print-and-paste figures for RPGing available around the net.  Just print two of each and paste them to cardboard and voila.

You could also just print out some and stick the paper together: like so. Though it depends on what you're using them for. Wargames tend to want specific base sizes, but with RPGs it doesn't really make a difference.

If you wanted to actually try sculpting your own you'd probobly need some green stuff, some sort of armature (Reaper sells some I think, and I've seen people make their own out of paperclips), and some sculpting tools. Also a lot of patience I imagine.

edit: also holy crap. I was still on the fence a bit with this, but that's a lot of minis for 100 dollars!
