May be blindingly obvious, but in GIMP you need to save as a native format, and/or export as a PNG.

Here's a combat log from my legendary hammerdwarf, Edem II, who was only able to bruise enemies for years:

Even when invaders were knocked down and he could headshot them, his warhammer just couldn't seal the deal.  The community got together and discovered a major growth bug affecting nearly all fortress-born creatures (in my sig).  The reason Edem II could hardly damage anything with blunt weapons is because he never grew after being born and was approximately the size of a kitten!
