Breeding Dragons
« on: August 07, 2012, 01:10:40 pm »

I've finally captured a pair of dragons one male and one female and after training and penning them the female ran straight to a nest and layed 3 eggs. The only problem is they dont seem to be hatching. I read in the wiki if it's 2 seasons they probably aren't fertilised. So should i dump the eggs and wait for another clutch?

Also, i went into raw/objects/creature_standart.txt and added [CHILD:1] to the dragon (both, the main one and the one in my region save as well). Is there more than just this to make the eggs hatch?

i think its because of the dragons extreme size .

you must wait more time for bigger eggs to hatch .

Maybe the eggs have died? If the mother leaves the nest for too long, the eggs won't hacth. Also, the eggs can sometimes just die without any particular reasons. Wait for a year or so and if the eggs haven't hatched you can cook them and wait for the next clutch.

If the mother leaves the nest at all actually.

It's my recollection that hatching time has nothing to do with egg size...

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I can confirm that. Halving the size of a dragon for instance does not affect hatching time in any way.

1x1 nestbox room, set as a 1x1 pasture for the female dragon.
Once she's in, locked and forbid the door so she doesn't have space to move-- and best forbid the eggs as well just to make sure no wannabe hobbit tries to steal off with some *dragon egg biscuit*.

Well i 'd'umped those 3 eggs and she's layed another.

She definetly isn't moving. I have her in the far corner of a large pasture and cleaned it out of pigs and dogs. Nobody goes in because dragon eggs aren't stored or cooked.

I'm starting to worry that i have to make a new fortress for the changes with [CHILD:1] to take effect. Please tell me that isn't true. I did modify the file in my region folder too.

Modifying existing creatures raws changes saved game's raws once you load them, so the changes you've made have taken effect already.

Add the [PET] tag and they'll breed.

Nope, the CHILD tag has always been enough for me.

dragons have [PET_EXOTIC], no need to add [PET] as well. Most likely, the trainer who reinforces the tameness of the dragon is upsetting the hatching. I've had this with a variety of creatures before, giant sparrows etc

Nope, the CHILD tag has always been enough for me.

My experience comes from breeding Draltha.
By default they have a [CHILD:5] tag.
They would not give birth.

dragons have [PET_EXOTIC], no need to add [PET] as well. Most likely, the trainer who reinforces the tameness of the dragon is upsetting the hatching. I've had this with a variety of creatures before, giant sparrows etc

Draltha have the [PET_EXOTIC] tag by default. The draltha would not give birth and would eventually die of old age. When I changed the tag to [PET] they popped out so many draltha babies I had to add draltha meat to the fortress menu.

I am not sure if this matters, but despite what the [PET] tag implies, I did not use any trainers and kept them as "wild" so to speak. I just caught them and set them free in an enclosed "farm."

@_Ivan_ I say it is worth a shot to add the [PET] tag. Let us know the results.

Exotics need to be tamed. Tigers, jaguars and the like are also exotic and breed normally once tamed.
