How do rollers work?
« on: August 07, 2012, 06:03:35 am »

I've understood that rollers help build up minecart's speed and pull it up z-levels. However, how do I build them so that they work? Do I place them on top of a ramp? Do they speed up carts when they are directly on them or one tile away or one z below?

Build them on flat ground, and power them from the side.

You can build them on ramps without a problem, you just need the gear that will power it in place first. FYI I only use constructed track, so I can't speak about what works on engraved track (I hear that ramps with engraved track are dodgy regardless). Simply build a normal roller on a constructed ramp and it will work fine. Also works if it starts on flat ground and then goes on to a ramp. You need one roller per z level if it is a multi-level ramp (as far as I know), but the one at the bottom can cover flat ground and the first ramp.

Engraved ramps work just fine. The wonky part is learning to designate them properly.

I'd never actually tried rollers on ramps.

Yeah, I can already designate tracks on the ramps, thanks for the advice about rollers.
