How to make dwarfs drop items?
« on: August 06, 2012, 10:29:06 am »

Hi. I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for awhile, and i just recently started a new fortress.
After a few minutes, i accidently designated Woodcutting as a labor for one of my dwarves,
and he went and picked up an axe to use. After i undesignated it, he wouldn't drop the axe.
I tried dumping it, putting it in a weapon stockpile, etc. but it wouldnt work.
Is there a key for making dwarves drop items?

No, but turning off Wood Cutting should have made him immediately drop the axe (or store it in a weapon stockpile). Did you turn off the labor in-game, or did you use a third-party utility such as Dwarf Therapist?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I tried turning of woodcutting, but he still wouldn't drop it. I didn't use Dwarf Therapist, as i actually prefer the in-game menu to Dwarf Therapist.
Maybe he's an elf in disguise, trying to minimalize the amount of trees i cut?

Maybe it is still forbidden/dumped?

It is not forbidden, nor designated to be dumped.
Maybe it's a bug?

Is your dwarf in a Military squad?

He is not in a miltary squad, and has no combat skills whatsoever.

Some jobs are low priority jobs. If he has no other pressing jobs that must be done he will take care of equipment issues, but changing out equipment seems to be a very low priority job.

Try disabling all labor on him so that he will be idle.

Alternatively, you could recruit him into the military. Make a new uniform that replaces clothing rather than being worn over clothing. Also make that uniform empty. By assigning the dwarf that uniform you're forcing to the dwarf to strip completely naked. This will of course lead to very unhappy dwarves, but there seems to be some leeway time between when they get naked and go insane. If he can get dressed again in a short enough period of time it should be okay.

thanks Hyndis, that miltary-draft method work. However, if anyone else has a diffrent way that doesn't have the
possibility of FUN, please post it here.

v, i, scroll to the axe, view it, then press f to forbid it. The Dwarf will drop it. Then k, f to reclaim it.
