This. Plus, why don't we rotate in more peasants? She'll probably like us more if we do more than what she asks.

And we have to get her to like us, since obviously we're going to marry her and have her son killed off at some point.

EDIT: not to mention that more soldiers equals a better chance of more surviving, right?

Assuming any of them are going to survive, that is. But in that case we're screwed anyway, since we'll have no trained men at all...

Should we send a spy to check out the enemy's forces for ourselves? Or we could just go and have a look ourselves, less chance of minions screwing up.

Also we should totally adopt the english longbow model of militia. Longbow training on Sundays for all able bodied men.

+1, all able bodied males will be required to rotate into militia training, and Sunday longbow training sounds good. Good for socializing and bringing the community together as well.

+1 as well, except for the part of assassinating the son and marrying her, for which I give -1. NO TRAISON. I emphasize.

Hmm.. Can we at least check how old the duchess is?

EDIT: by which I DON'T mean actually ask her :p - just establish a ballpark figure from her general appearance.

You except the Duchess to be arround 25 years of Age, as you research into why she is the Duchess of such a big area of such young age you find ou that her father is the king of another kingdom lieing to the East, and that she has searched refugee with her men in this kingdom, been granted this fief by your own king which has earned him quite some enemies hoping for that territory aswell. You send 5 more militias into training, once they have been trained to milita standards they will be exchanged for 5 others. You also grant the hunters their 10 gold pieces with them having to deliver 1/7th of their loot to you, as you realise they do not understand what that is you just tell them to bring the amount of flesh which would actually come out of all four feet of the animal to you, which they now understand and execute in this manner. The granary is finished which allows you to store 500 worth of food for bad times.

Ask the elders what they need. We have a bit of gold sitting around, let's invest.

Send three idlers to work on the cabins, allocate ten to make the pasture bigger - so it can hold... 40 animals, yes. That's going to be good enough for now.

Also, buy some weapons and armor. 40 golds worth of it. Store it in the castle. Also:

What type of animals in the pasture? Large or Medium? It can currently hold 10 Large or 20 Medium, currently 8 large space being used up, 2 being free.
What kind of weapons and armor? Leather? Gambesons? Axe's? Spears? Prices vary heavily.

Whatever size a cow is, to be honest. We're going to herd cows and enjoy cow leather.

Armor will be chain if it isn't too expensive - else just forget it, we'll have our own leather later, weapons will be axes and pikes mostly with an occasional crossbow thrown in.

Well, the price for ONE chainmal would be arround 120-200 gold pieces, depending on the thickness and craftsmanship, so we'll focus on buying axes + pikes? (Pikes as in 2 metre long PIKES or simple spears?)

Gold coins seem incredibly devaluated to me. They are probably made out of copper or silver or something.

Gold is just the simple other word for "money" here, it's pretty much real medieval cost as to that time a chainmail armor was worth 20-30 cows. Iron was expensive as heck, let alone the price of the work needed to make one as the rings have to be assembled one by one.

Pikes as in the 5 metre long anti-cavalry goodness. I for once haven't a clue who we'll be battling, so we might as well. And yes, axes. Perhaps a shield or a dozen? Wooden, though. Iron you just proved to be a very costly deal.
