Write a letter to our liege, introducing ourselves and seeing if he has any requests or needs.

Villagers start complaining about too less food being produced, 3 people who deem themselves as skilled hunters ask for 10 gold pieces to equip themselves with basic bows to start hunting, they also ask you for the formal right to do so.
YOu send a letter to the duchy of Shanaria, you are very surprised as this letter comes back:

Farewell Sir Domilian,
It might in more or less time happen that I need your direct support in a cause of high urgency.
My son has claims to the county located to my east, the County of Weyrond, should those claims not be honoured then I plan on attacking that county which has an estimated strength of 75 troops, most of them only poorly trained militias. I would be pleasured to see you raising at least 20 troops to be ready when I have need for them.
-Lady Cilan Shanaria

You look on the ending of the letter once more, eyes wide open...a LADY controlling a DUCHY? You can not believe what you just saw.
You get another idea for a shield in your head, and find it very good.
To the west lies the border of your kingdom, after that there lies only wilderness. Your kingdom marks the end to the known world to the west and nothing is known about the area further in that direction.
You do decide not to a hire any spys, why would you do that? And futhermore, for what would you currently need them?

[For now on I will only accept suggestions that are having +1 rating by others, means:
Player A: Suggestion
B: +1
C: +1
D: -1
Then it would go through. Exceptations are when there were not enough people to vote in 2 hours]

Check and see if these hunters are actually skilled before letting them start. Also, in our granting for rights to them, include a small tax to recoup the cost of our equipment expenditures over a few years.

I suppose we better add 15 of the idlers to our militia. The one remaining person can help with the lodges.

Although this request is quite insane, given our town's population of just around 50... nearly half of our people in a militia?

For now, though, start training them, and send another letter telling her we are doing so. Also request the right to advertise for immigrants willing to join our village in the local area.

Also, ask the duchess for a competent metalworker.

He can prospect our land for decent mining and later set up a decent smithing industry, for better soldiers/trade.

+1 to everything but the additional militia.

We need them as per duchal command. And if we decide to ignore it, we need them to battle against the duchal forces.

Any kind of prospector is good.

As an information: Those militia's do not need to be in active service, it is enough if you have just 20 military trained peasants to raise when needed.
As for prospectors: IT is unlikely that any nobles will give you skilled craftsman that they need in their own services, you can still try however.
1 hour of discussion for you guys then I make my turn.

I'd rather see our peasants back. The better they are, the more chance we have of them returning and the better our relation with the duchy is.

@hubris: where did you made this shield??

Do we have any legal obligation toward this lady? Is she, as I suspect, a widow? or something else?

we have currently 59 peasants, plus ourselves (whelp. It grows quickly!)
we can sustain 40 people. 70 when those new plots will be finished. We need them ASAP. 14 idlers to it and 2 last to granary.

Give the money to would-be hunters, but say that you expect one tenth of what they catch, for five years.

Answer to Lady Shanaria that you are yet barely self-sustaining, but that you are working on a militia, and are yourself a worthy warrior. Should the need arise, you will answer her call with whatever you have at the moment, in exchange you ask for classic feudal things: protection, some assistance (would you lend me a clerk mylady? please?), yadda yadda. In short, make official vassalization (assuming we do not have another suzerain yet, except for the king.)

20 militia is a lot, I think we should train 10 instead using the excuse that we don't have enough farms.

Maybe we start rotating 5 additional militia in to the training, then rotate them out when they have basic skills. So we'll have 5 soldiers (full time) and eventually 15 trained but unactivated militia. The militia that aren't training can work on other jobs.

This. Plus, why don't we rotate in more peasants? She'll probably like us more if we do more than what she asks.

And we have to get her to like us, since obviously we're going to marry her and have her son killed off at some point.

EDIT: not to mention that more soldiers equals a better chance of more surviving, right?

Assuming any of them are going to survive, that is. But in that case we're screwed anyway, since we'll have no trained men at all...

Should we send a spy to check out the enemy's forces for ourselves? Or we could just go and have a look ourselves, less chance of minions screwing up.

Also we should totally adopt the english longbow model of militia. Longbow training on Sundays for all able bodied men.

I agree with Maldevious. Oh, and I'm not very agreeable with marrying her...
