This all went down right after I clocked out yesterday. Didn't even hear about it until this morning. 

Shooter has been identified as Wade Michael Page, 40-year old white male, former U.S. Army PsyOps.
There's also some indiciations of a recent breakup with his girlfriend, domestic problems, etc.
So...this could be a really, really shitty form of "Suicide by cop". Maybe it was meant to be a 2-for-1...kill some foreigners and suicide by cop all in the same go.

That said, if this was a hate crime I don't think it was one of the garden-variety "OMG A TURBAN ITS OSAMA" kind. You don't see that kind of stupid in PsyOps. This may have been a general "kill foreigners" thing. Unfortunately, since the shooter was killed on the scene, motive may never be 100% clear.

You can expect this to throw some gasoline on the gun rights fire that was beginning to die down.

I'm seen some media speculation that he was a skinhead or neo-Nazi but nothing official. In fact, I think the FBI has come out in the opposite direction, stating that he had no ties or memberships in any extremist organizations and a very minor criminal record.

oh so he was dick in there too? congrats he's not even considered a citizen anymore.

edit: this also means he acquired that gun illegally as US laws prohibits any felons and dishonorable discharged servicemen to handle weapons.
