Shooting rampage in a Wisconsin Sikh temple, 7 dead including the gunman.
Quote
Federal law enforcement officials told NBC News the suspected gunman had no obvious connection to domestic terror or white supremacist groups and apparently was not on any list of suspected terrorists.  The suspect was in his early 40s, and while he had an arrest record, it was for minor offenses, one federal official said.

That's really depressing. The second link said that it was a hate-crime, and that is what really depresses me. I don't understand why anyone could hate Sikhs, for whom I have the deepest respect.

Sikhs are the epitome of loving those who hate them. When they formed, the Hindus kicked them out for sacrilege, but when the Muslims attacked the Hindus, the Sikhs came rushing to the defence of the Hindus.

Horrible, but I don't like that the police admit they don't know the motive and then call it a hate crime in the same sentence.

Not much else to say until we get further details.

To clarify, the police aren't saying anything; the 'hate crime' label was used in speculation by someone else who was interviewed about it, nothing official.

I heard about this but only from a friend as "a man shot up a Sikh temple thinking it was Mulsim." Which, I mean, if we're going to speculate on a motive that seems the most likely one, after all who could have anything against Sikhism? But there's also a huge danger in reporting speculation like that as truth and it's just going to lead to more problems down the line. Especially if that wasn't his motivation.

There are barely any Sikhs in the U.S. at all, and this is the first time I've heard of someone going after them here specifically.

Seriously, the "he was trying to kill muslims!" thing is just popular consensus and jumping to conclusions. Better that we wait for hard evidence found by the investigation before guessing anything about his motives.

Well some of the reports in the I have read in the Southern Poverty law center seem to suggest that it is actually a reason for some people but maybe I am jumping to conclusions

Local politician Mark Honadel called the attack "craziness".

The state representative told CNN: "Unfortunately, when this type of stuff hits your area, you say to yourself, 'why?' But in today's society, I don't think there's any place that's free from idiots."
Not yesterday's society either, bub, though I agree with the sentiment :P

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Since he has no ties to any sort of supremacist or militia groups so far as they know, it could also be a case of just general hatred of those who seem foreign. The whole 'They took err jerbs' mentality.

Edit: Now there's this:

It's mainly those individuals who have been targeted or shot. Maybe it's because the ladies were fortunate enough to dodge it out, but so far most of the people I've heard have been shot and killed were all turbaned males."

There was also a visiting priest from India at the time, I think he was also one of the injured.

e: Witnesses are saying that the shooter was dropped off and the vehicle drove off before the shooting. So that's 1 shooter and a driver.

But... How do you even confuse Sikhs from Muslims?

It doesn't seem like the shooter did much planning, so I don't imagine he would have known that ahead of time.

The 9/11 tattoo unfortunately leads credence to the idea that he did this to try to kill Muslims.
e: Witnesses are saying that the shooter was dropped off and the vehicle drove off before the shooting. So that's 1 shooter and a driver.
This just got a lot more complicated.
But... How do you even confuse Sikhs from Muslims?
Firstly, by being a crazy ignorant bigot.

Secondly, some Sikhs and Muslims both wear turbans and do not cut their hair.

Thirdly, the vast majority of the world's Sikhs live in India, which is right on the edge of the Islamic world.

Not white and the men wear turbans. It sucks to say but some people are stupid enough to see a person in a turban and go "Lookit dat terry wrist!"

Yeah and also rural Wisconsin actually has a decently sized Muslim population so in the attack they may said it doesn't look like a church so it must be a mosque, alternatively they knew what it was and they were really fundementalist
