Favourite Sci-Fi TV/Movie series thread!
« on: August 04, 2012, 04:22:19 pm »

So basically what it says on the tin. Pick one from the poll or use 'other' if you really have too! Keep in mind that animes aren't really for this - there's hundreds of animes about sci-fi, besides, anime has it's own thread around.

I simply love Star Trek. All the militaristic and (fake-)scientific atmosphere of the series. I always liked watching TOS/TNG series, but when DS9 came in (war plots, spies, Cardassians), I was sucked in.

Feel free to discuss and vote in the poll. Whilst I don't expect any battles in this thread, I do ask you to keep it as civil and peaceful as possible.

Live long, and prosper - and may the Force be with you :3

Firefly. I enjoyed the whole "these are the protagonists, they're (almost) all bastards" thing, the space western feel, the characters, the ship, the setting, everything.

Ayup, it is Firefly for me as well. I enjoyed the lack of rubber foreheads.

Ghost in the Shell.

That's more like Cyberpunk rather than Sci-Fi about interplanetary stuff and such :P

I wasn't sure if it would count, but if not, Homeworld.

But cyberpunk is science fiction! Are we to assume, then, that this is about our favorite sci-fi series of those listed in the poll?

Ghost in the Shell.
Seconded. Cyberpunk is sci-fi every bit as much as any of those options. Perhaps even more so, as many of those options don't even explore sci-fi concepts with anything more than a cursory glance. In fact, Cyberpunk was created as a counterpoint to the utopian sci-fi of things like Star Trek, and was intended as a sort of 'moving the discussion' of sci-fi away from superfluous spouting of utopian ideals and towards a setting with more realism.

WHY CAN I ONLY VOTE FOR ONE?

Star Wars, Firefly, Star Trek, Warhammer 40,000, David Weber's Safehold series...all good stuff. There's probably a hundred more that I can't name off-hand.

Oddly, I haven't enjoyed "classic" sci-fi as much as I hoped. I couldn't get into Dune and I found Snow Crash horribly dull. Next up is Ender's Game, and I really hope it's good  :-\

I believe Haspen meant space opera specifically.

Speaking of which, is there any love for Red Dwarf?

Precised the thread to be about TV/Movie series and anime is out -> it has own thread around :3

Added Dune and Doctor Who (how could I forget duh), and reset the poll. For the last time :v

Star Trek definitely.  As for my favorite of the series, well:

The Next Generation (Best)
The Original Series
Deep Space Nine
Enterprise
Voyager (Worst)

That said, all series have great episodes (Voyager had Year of Hell) and absolutely horrible episodes (TNG had Genesis).  I just like some series better than others.
