How about a Nostalgia thread?
« on: August 03, 2012, 05:20:34 pm »

Commodore 64 is 30 years old now.

Copying programs by hand from magazines...

I even wrote my own 80 column terminal (4 pixel wide characters, 'W'/'H'/'M' were a challenge...) so I could play Hack/Nethack on a dial-up UNIX system.

What do you miss?

Warcraft 3 came out like, 13 years ago. It's half as old as me. And I still play it.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I miss the time when the true democracy existed.
Ancient Greece.
How can i miss things that i did not experience myself, though?
Also, the time when i had enough games that i were always busy playing them.
Oh yes Warcraft 3, times of my childhood.

Been getting urges to play Starcon 2 again.

Stumbling across this didn't help.

I remember the times when I used to watch French version of Cartoon Network (with English sound track), back in the early 2000s. My favourite cartoons were Ed, Edd & Eddy and everything made in the 1940s/1950s/1960s (like Looney Tunes, or Tom & Jerry).

We had to use various technical tricks to crack the satellite broadcast provider's encryption system, though.

I remember having a ND64 when I was five and it was the most advance thing in my house, now I have a Wii, Four computers, and a Xbox(old and new) and a flat screen. I'm also told of some far away time when America was the land of the free, not the home of the rich, enslaver of the poor.

What do you miss?

Dialup BBS. Corporations with easily hackable 800 number voice mail systems. High school girls. Novell Netware. Denim jackets being in style. In-line skating. Riding a motorcycle. Leaping-kung practice with friends. All night kung fu movie/pizza/mountain dew parties. LAN parties. Meeting people in real life after having known them online...and everyone being comfortable using online handles instead of real names. DEFCON. Berkeley. Being casually able to perform physical feats that when photographed people later accuse the picture of having been photoshopped. Spending time with friends. Adventure. Fun.

lol I was on a light nostalgia trip today. Ended up playing Pacman World for the PSX on an emulator. How I loved yet hated that game when I was a little kid...
I went through the levels like, "I remember this...I hated this so much!!"

And yeah, RTSs do have that effect. Happened to me with both AoE and that monstrosity known as WarDick Warcraft3.

I miss...video games so difficult that they will make you weep.

I grew up on Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads and Contra.

I miss not being able to remember things. Damn you long term memory, you've foiled me yet again.

Also I just picked up Grudge Warriors from my old PS1 collection... and the nostalgia filled my veins.

Other than the PS1 years I'm not really old enough to have nostalgia over things.
