Stone traps.
« on: August 03, 2012, 05:20:25 pm »

Now, the wiki says these often fail to deliver significant damage, but from my experience a rock dropped from even 1 z level has caused massive blunt trauma injuries, consistent with the damage inflcited by stone trap, even through armor and the like. Is the wiki refering to the fact that they are unlikely to kill, rather than horridly maim, or am I missing something?

It's possible the information is outdated. This calls for Science.

In my very non-science observation they don't kill outright all that often, but frequently break bones in creatures troll size and smaller.

I've repeatedly seen them utterly cripple goblins, their mounts, the groom that brushed their mane, etc etc. It's no *Serrated Steel Disk*, but for costing what amounts to a pair of rocks, it's pretty nasty.

This makes me ask: Will ice suffice for a stonefall trap? because I have a calm me down fort with tons of that.

Stone traps, when they hit, will almost always break one or more bones, and will instantly kill if the boulder lands on the victims head like all things will.

I believe after falling damage was reworked, stone-fall traps have become more lethal.

The basic problem with a stone trap is that you only get a single attack per trap.

A single trap component for a weapon trap can attack 3 times. This means if you fill a weapon trap full of 10 serrated discs, you get 30 attacks with the discs.

While a falling rock can do a lot of damage, 30 falling rocks will do 30 times as much damage.

If stone traps could be packed with multiple stones you would get a similar level of carnage.

Alternatively, you can make your own stonefall trap. Or perhaps more like an orbital bombardment trap. Build a retracting bridge at the very top of the map. Pile a whole bunch of rocks or other heavy objects onto the bridge. Link bridge to a lever or pressure plate.

Retract bridge.

Rocks fall, everyone dies.

My stone traps cripple and kill dozens of trolls and goblins, but they're a pain.  I agree that weapon traps are better.

Reading the combat logs from encounters from stone fall traps, there is more than one attack- at least five. The next time a gobbo blunders into one, I'll take a screenie, but they are most definitly hit more than once.

well looks like stonefall traps are a viable defense once again!

Yeah.  Thus why I didn't make a trap.  In it's current state the fortress didn't need a trap, the whole damn fortress is a trap.

Huh? Last I checked, trap components work untill jammed, then when cleaned, they work again, unless you're talking about attacks per turn.
