I tried to get into MOBA games.  But for starters, the games didn't want me.  When I tried getting onto LoL I got a lot of hate for being low level and unfamiliar with the game.  Even before that though, I tried joining some DotA games on Warcraft 3, and they would boot me from the room as soon as they saw I was downloading the map, or I couldn't tell them the gold price of a specific item.  The massive elitism in MOBA titles is a huge turnoff.

So I stuck with LOCO for a little while, it was a little bit low-key and you could get through a game without being talked down to.  I realized that it just wasn't fun.  You follow the same routine to such a strict extent that you could literally macro the whole thing.  Pick X character with Y skill build, buying Z items and going down S alley.  Repeat until fun.  There's no room for experimentation or messing up.  Get the wrong item or the wrong character or the wrong skill and your character is ruined, because chances are the other guy has picked the right stuff and is going to roflstomp you.  The fact that there is a "best" set of stats is really troubling too.  So many of these types force you to min-max for one stat and the others become worthless, usually it's attack.  Beef up your Atk as much as possible as fast as possible.  Def becomes worthless and tank characters have to rely on gimmick skills to do anything, and then they still can't deal any damage.

I really feel as if playing a MOBA match, and watching a MOBA match on Youtube provide the same experience.  They work to enforce an elitist standpoint of strict character builds and specific use of skills, so that anyone good will play pretty much the same as anyone else who's good, except for the human/computer elements like reflex time and latency.

For the record though, I also shrug as the title "FPS" for similar reasons.  RTS sometimes falls into the same issues, but it's a genre such that if you're going to make a game, it almost has to be unique in some way.

MOBA players are often dicks for some reason.
Personally i did play LoL quite a lot but gave it up at lvl25 or so.

Other MOBAs are worse because usually the winning side is decided in like... the first 15 minutes of the game.
After that it's just a systhematic steamroll of one side with the weak undergeared defenders getting systhematically killed off... and they won't get a chance because they lose gold when they die so they won't get any stronger while the enemy team probably completed their builds long ago and is just effing around with them.

And did i mention most MOBA players are dicks?

As for tower defense... i'm not really interested in them and if you played one you played the all.

I always tend to see TD/MOBA as "RTSlite" which I suppose could be argued either way. I found the MOBA community way too hostile to "newbs" to ever bother with and that there's a whole bunch of TD gameplay stagnation.
I do enjoy the "action" variations of MOBA/TDs though; like Orcs Must Die! or Monday Night Combat.

I see tower defence, I think: shallow, boring, repetitive.

I see MOBA, I think that it could be either really fun or really bad.

I'm curious: Does anyone else see 'MOBA' or 'tower defense' used in the description of a game, and promptly lose all interest in it? I definitely do (in both cases).

Yes.

Moving on now.

MOBA, yes. Because more than likely the raging angrymen of a community from the other games will appear in that one.

TD, I'll try it if theres a demo or its free, otherwise meh to it.

Pretty much "Multiplayer"-anything is a miss for me. If a game depends on the cooperation of others for its fun factor, then there's no way you can milk any enjoyment out of it unless you've got a dedicated group that you play with on a regular basis, so you can trust your teammates and know that you're not going to have "LOL NEWB" and homosexual slanders thrown in your face just because you don't have 8 hours a day to devote to playing time.

I've got a wife, kids, a job, a mortgage, and MAXIMUM four or five hours a week I can use for gaming. I'd rather spend that time playing something I enjoy without worry, not being offered up as a sacrifice on the Altar of Noob. If I ever find a group of 5-6 gamers whose schedule matches mine and who can actually make multiplayer fun again, then I'll invite them to move into my house and we can LAN-party for the rest of eternity.

Tower defense games have to be similarly balanced, difficulty-wise and variety-wise. Plants vs. Zombies is a good mix for me, because there are simple ways to win if you're just starting out, but almost any combination of towers can be viable if you're willing to think about it. Other games I'll usually try, but it takes a REALLY good tower defense game to make me pay Real Money for it.

TDs: If i need to burn some time and its a flash one its ok by me, I think the only TD i played in .exe form was Dungeon Defenders, and im kind of sure it will be the last.

MOBA: Two factors here: 1/2 Fanboy and 1/2 Experience tell me they are just not as good as Dota, i try some but skip most.

MOBAs I've not been interested in generally simply because of the multiplayer component, since I've kind of not played anything multiplayer-wise for about 2 years or so now.

On the other hand, I love tower defence games, if they're well executed enough to be interesting and good (which is an unnecessary comment, since the same applies to any game - but since I've typed it already it's staying). Plants vs Zombies is a nice little game and has resource management (in this case you generate the extra income solely via your sunflowers, and get no resources from killing stuff) and a sense of progression, which is nice. Defence Grid is a good example of the genre, too.

Lately there's been a bit of a thing with 'action-TD' games, some of which are fun - Dungeon Defenders, despite its RPG/MMO style grinding, is quite entertaining. Orcs Must Die and its recent sequel are also fun to play, although there is an unfortunate tendency for there to be 'one right way' to set traps up due to the limited trap slots. Sanctum, though, I just can't get into, mostly because you can't simply rely on towers and mop up the rest - some enemies require direct intervention and need you to be a good shot (Bobbleheads >< ) , and FPS-wise I couldn't hit a barn wall from the inside.

I like MOBAs in general, but I find tower defense to be a pretty uninteresting genre. TDs can probably keep me entertained for the first 10 minutes, then it just feels like a repetitive exercise in boredom.

I haven't liked any MOBA games EVER, but I've tried out awesomenauts and the combination of a fresh release, few characters, a pay once to play model, and a 2-D platformer style have really captivated me. It's the only MOBA I can see myself actually getting into.

Tower defenses generally are the most horribly boring things ever. While there are a few TDs that show some creativity, the vast majority of them seem little more than tests of game knowledge -- ie, you know what's good, and what's just newbie traps.

I think you can make a TD game that's actually... fun... but it's hard and requires creativity. (Anyone ever play Auction Defense?)

As for MOBAs, meh. I'd rather play a RTS than a MOBA, more fun. Might be interested in playing a FPS MOBA though... (or even a ARPG MOBA.)

Wouldn't an ARPG moba just be an online ARPG's PvP with monsters getting in the way of looting the other player's loot?

Nah, it'd be something like an arena-mode Sacrifice with more character stats, if they were going to try to do it worth a shit.

It does seem like every time a friend has tried to introduce me to TD or a MOBA, it tends to go like this.

"Hey let's play X, you'll love it."

"Ok, I'll give it a shot."

*ROFLSTOMP*

"Wasn't that fun?!"

"For....who, exactly?"

I remember playing DOTA my first time and getting owned, and when I asked what I did wrong the reply was "Oh, you should have been farming creeps the whole time to make levels."

Priceless information that would have been nice to have at, oh, I dunno, any fucking moment in time we were playing.

When your own friends basically get you to play so they can stomp your uninformed ass, it comes as no surprise to me that randoms are not only doing the same thing, they're also completely intolerant.
