Cave spider silk farming
« on: August 02, 2012, 08:07:02 am »

I was able to buy cave spiders on embark (!) and set up a silk collection farm. Basically a 5x5 room with a locked foor that leads to my weavery. The spiders are released through a lever and once the room is full I unlock the door (passable-not pet passable) and my wevers rush in, along with regular haulers. I try to catch them all in a cage immediately, since I've lost some of them mysteriously (I killed all my cats beforehand), their remains lying on the door tile. The catching saves the spiders, but loses some webs. Any tips how to make this efficient?

Vermin die if they get caught in a door, jamming the door open (and sometimes resulting in hilarity, as was the case with the Monarch Butterfly incident in Boatmurdered). If you want the spiders to survive longer, just make the room larger.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Vermin shouldn't be harmed by floor hatches.
