So I just had my first plain old murder
« on: August 02, 2012, 05:45:25 am »

Playing along fine, waiting out a siege in my nice secure fortress, when suddenly one of my dwarves finds my mayor dead in his bedroom, apparently murdered. No drained of blood or anything, just murder. Now, how do I solve said murder?

Sounds interesting. I didn't know that this was implemented. They only thing I can think of is to check the justice screen from the status menu. If there are no witnesses I guess you would need to check through your dwarfs manually to see who had a grudge against him.

Well that's just odd...

I found the deceased through another dwarf's relationship screen and used it to view his. I was sure he had a wife, but there was only 'passing acquaintance' for everyone he knew. Also, no witnesses, no nothing, just the person who found the body

My guess would be more an unnoticed syndrome or some such, possible thirst or hunger if you had accidentally shut him in his room (he's a noble, folks do that a lot round here ;) ).  I dont think dwarves can actually commit what we would call murder outside of a tantrum

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

There is a vampire around.
Check for dwarves who never sleep, drink or eat and have no thoughts about that also.

The Dwarf found was not drained of blood. This was not a vampire related death.

Old age, maybe?

I mean, look at us.  You give us a young child and a puppy, and we produce, possibly, one of the biggest sins against nature the game has ever seen.

Put his wife in jail.

If you engrave a slab for him, place it and examine it, you might get more information about his death...

Interesting... was there any blood? How old was he?

The game is afoot!

I've seen "plain old murders" in the past, but only during tantrum spirals. I'd read the announcement list/gamelog and see who was tantruming recently.

This.  Probably an unhappy dwarf that went to the mayor for a meeting, but got the "Yelled at somebody in charge lately but only got angrier" thought, tantrumed, and killed the mayor by punching his face in who happened to be standing on the bed tile.

If the dorf who did it was female, her name in the dwarven language contains the word white and the item punched/thrown at the mayor was a modded in candlestick, I totally called it.
