Looks like a small pebble of harder silvery shinier material which has been sitting ontop of the softer sandy material below it long enough for it to erode around it from wind, thus leaving the non eroded rock on a pillar. Eg like this
That could very well be it. Perhaps actual silver?

Isn't silver soft? o.O
How are its alloys?

Clearly, it's a pistol-grip weapon of some sort. We need to recover that, hope it doesn't explode into fragments, and study it so we can replicate it.

Yeah, silver is pretty soft. Not sure how well it'd stand up to erosion though. Not sure about the alloys.

If it's not part of a previous mission (still my leading theory) but is still metallic, then it's probably something fairly boring like tin. Heck, maybe it's quartz and it's just catching the light.

It's Excalibur. Martian Excalibur. The rover that pulls the x'anthi from the stone shall become, by divine right, King of all Mars.

What the hell would that make NASA?

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The best part is that I mixed the myths and it doesn't even matter, because Mars doesn't have any lakes, and thus by default no Martian Lady of the Lake.

Also, NASA is God. Or something.

NASA is Merlin? That whole Curiosity Delivery System definitely reeks of AWizardDidIt.

That fits. Now why didn't they equip Curiosity with a lance? Weren't they prepared for the possibility of a jousting tourney on the grounds of Cydonia Castle?

Don't be silly. Only SpaceX uses Merlin to get to space!

I hope that Curiosity finds biological life so that it can built itself a nice cabin to retire in on mars.

If the life is sapient... Then a cabin of skulls.

Mission Accomplished

Edit: For those of you who have no idea what's going on, there was a spambot which managed to be both on topic and nail the BAY12ian mindset. Oh, and decent grammar.
