Or maybe they're trying to drive them out of hiding.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

And now for something completely different.
If they're gonna do shit like that, they should've played Megadeth's "High Speed Dirt" on descent.

Incidentally, Beagle 2 (ESA/UKSA effort at a mars lander with a cool robotic arm I had a good look at as bts of it were made in a department (robotic/compsci) at my institution)) was supposed to play a specially comissioned track by Blur as its succesful landing signal, instead of some computer gibberish (in the words of Prof Colin Pillager). Granted this was still a radio/microwave signal back to earth and not audible sound in Mars' atmosphere (I predict sounds would be very faint and deep in the thin CO2 atmosphere), and was never actually played as the probe hit the surface at some mad speed rendering it inoperable.

C'mon, NASA....MUSE's "Knights of Cydonia"? Hello?

Double points if Curiosity had a videoscreen playing the music video.
x10000 points if Martians came up and watched the video and thought that was a depiction of daily life on Earth. xD

x1000000 points if the video was of the cydonia base assault from X-Com with Muse being the soundtrack.

Muse is a British band, and Curiosity is an American rover.
If people at NASA had chosen Muse, they would probably get criticized for being unpatriotic.

One of Curiosity's main components was made by Russians.

You are overestimating the extent of American patriotism.

You can't be patriotic of something you're ignorant of.

I just realized how stupid that was. People do it all the time.

Americans are both over-patriotic and over-critical of their government simultaneously.

That's what makes us so unique. The other countries just can't make sense of the Logic Bomb that is the U.S.A.  :P

But seriously, space travel going fully international was actually probably a bad thing. We don't have any drive without those damn dirty commies.

It's a bit of self delusion; we think the ideas are always awesome, but think the problem is failure in execution due to incompetence. It's never the ideas being flawed from the start.

So we elect the same jackasses to do the same stupid things over and over again.
