A shortage? Strqnge, last thing I heard was that the military was selling of their helium reserves.
-_- How long ago was that?
Last thing I heard they wanted to get rid of the entire stockpile before 2015.
Facking facker fack. NEED HELIUM.
Wait. Is this where the "Let's put a balloon in LEO" thing spawned?

Top Tip: Dont throw empty beer cans into the reciever dish of a LIDAR that is measring the composition of the upper atmosphere. Turns out people get pissed when thier results indicate little other than huge amounts water and ethanol...

It's a photonic beam project. Ie a laser.

It's used to measure the athmospheric diffusion, which as you can see, is rather high.

Hmm. Maybe you can attach me to this "balloon" of yours, and then I punch out the sky from that, instead of hassling with the plane?
What, you don't want to try punching out space?
I don't know. I really don't want to make any black holes.

Unless your punches create matter, there won't be any black holes.

If you somehow tear the fabric of the universe, then the opposite will probably happen and a bunch of empty space will be made, lowering the universe's total density, creating a relativistic shockwave, and possibly pushing things around at FTL speeds.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Floating a nuclear boat on lakes made of Methane.
The standard stuff, take samples, blast things with lasers, search for life. Nothing special.

Sadly, due to budget issues, the NASA isn't going anywhere.

When exactly was it that we left modern times and entered the future?

I think we hit "the future" sometime in the 80s. Even had the weird clothing.
