I'm just hoping they remembered to equip it with an external speaker and a recording of Slim Whitman.

It will depend on how they word it.

So what if we discover hard evidence of life? Think NASA will get a fund boost?
If you want to get the fundie Christians onboard, just tell them that out there in the universe lie billions of aliens who haven't yet had the chance to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. KA-CHING!

2. That would imply them targetting Earth, not us.

Unfortunately, I get the feeling that the fundies would use the passage in the Bible about all life being subservient to humans meaning we can enslave aliens without moral consequence.

DON'T GIVE THEM THAT IDEA!

Unless...do you think we could pack a few dozen spaceships full of fundies (of all faiths) and try to get them to convert the sun, by laying on hands?

We could save costs by leaving out the ships. God will protect the faithfull.

We are just going to build a giant catapult and fling them into the sun? I'd be totally okay with that.

Well, according to certain groups, gravity doesn't exist, and instead Gods pushes people down. If we just give the pointy hats, like rockets, they'll float up on their own.

Besides, Catapults are outdated. Trebuchets are much more fun. Can shoot a lot at once.

No, no, no, no, no. It's not 2001. NASA would probably find a resource-rich country with a dictatorship in power.

The time for the bloodthirsty illegitimate Martian regime is up! Long live the Free Martian Army!

Great! They'll donate even more money. Not my fault if the 1st Interstellar Crusade Armada gets shoddy telemmetry data after all that R&D work has been done...
