But then, oxygen ain't stable, such a high amount of oxide would hint at the former existance of oxidizing materials.

I didn't even know about this.

Also, the US flags on the moon are probably white by now. All of the fabric's color will have degraded under the unfiltered light of the Sun. Kind of a poetic statement about nationalism and space travel, I suppose.

Dammit America, can't you do anything without sticking a flag to it? :P

Nah, I guess it's cool since Curiosity is an American project. I always thought it'd be good diplomacy to not only take our flag there but the flags of all our allies.

Eh, it's not even the whole flag. Just a little patriotic symbol :P

And like Karne said, this was primarily an American project anyway.

It wouldn't last for eternity, Mars has killer sandstorms.

Besides, Curiosity has better things to do.

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Japan once sent a rover to Mars, but it missed.

Not the landing site. It missed the entire fucking planet.

In the grand scheme of things, planets are really fucking small. I don't think that's as bad as our messing up imperial/metric units and crashing a few million dollar probe.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Everyone's had their space mishaps. Aside from the more well known ones, the USSR sent a probe to Venus but through a combination of apparently only packing EXACTLY enough batteries and misjudging Venus's atmospheric density, thus making the parachute too big, the probe ran out of batteries before it could even get far enough down that the pressure was a problem for it. (These early ones weren't built for surface pressure, just to study the atmosphere on the way down.)

More recently, Malaysia, I believe it was, sent up a satellite on an early SpaceX rocket. They wanted more frequent pictures of Malaysia and so wanted to put it into an orbit to allow them to do that. SpaceX screwed up the orbit so that the passes were fairly infrequent, although still slightly better than what they normally got elsewhere, I believe. Added onto that, the designers screwed up the angle on the sensor equipment so that what passes they did get were actually completely useless anyway.

I dunno. At least by crashing said multi-million dollar probe, we actually hit something :P

I believe the Russians also once lost a sattelite by making a typo in the commands, resulting in it turning it's solar pannels away from the sun. Before they noticed it, it's batteries had run out.

Then again, I believe the ESA still has a sattelite the size of a small bus flying uncontrollably around the Earth. Still trying to get that thing back online.
