By the way, very interesting point about how there hasn't been a new vision of the future for decades. Asides from the obvious, my generation is still rather uncertain. It doesn't help that we seem to be going into the cyberpunk era, minus the robots for a while :L.

The reason why there hasn't been a new vision of the future for decades is simple — there's been no rapid technological advancement for decades (the invention of the Internet and the development of new video games, smartphones, tablet PCs, TV sets and other useless gadgets doesn't count).
The rapid technological progress stopped around 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed. Along with the Cold War, the arms race came to an end, which was the main stimulus for the technological progress.

Actually, I'd argue that the creation of a global information network is a fairly substantial advance. One that wasn't among the most commonly predicted "fututre" things, as well. Even if it ends up being used to share pictures of cats doing funny things.

That we use it for such trivial things is probably a good indicator of just how ubiquitous, powerful, and important it is nowadays.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Still, there has been no major groundbreaking inventions for the past 20 years (OK, besides the Internet)
I wonder how the future history textbooks will describe the time we live in. It will probably be something like "The most important technological inventions of the 2000s are smartphones, tablet PCs, and social networks".
What a shame.

Truth be told it'll probably talk about how we made old stuff better. Pretty much everything is constantly being iterated on these days.

Damn it, apparently Neil Armstrong has passed away. Says a lot about how much we're dragging our feet on this that one of the only people to have walked on the moon just died from old age. >:(

Hardly. With proper investment, the Moon becomes an incredibly useful launching point for further exploration, what with the reduced gravity and no air resistance. It's a dead-end now, but it can be much more.

Gravity shenanigans would be neat, considering that the Higgs messes with mass.

We got the ISS into orbit. The Moon is just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away, as far as space goes :P
