Now she's holding me back.  She's too small to be walking as far as I want, and I can't run her, at least in the summer.
Obviously, you must pick up the dog and run. This has the added bonus of confusing all of your neighbors.

DAY ONE UPDATE

Made it to the gym, did 45 minutes of running and swam.  No snacking so far, but it will be a tough night.  I am so hungry, but pleased I am doing so well so far.

Good work, Urist. Whenever thoughts of snacking enter your mind, just remind yourself what you're trying to acheive. :)

I generally end up doing this whenever I take my dog for a walk. Which is, perhaps unsurprisingly, rare. :-\ Dog, y u so lazy??!
...Self, y YOU so lazy?
Then again, my dog is also blind. I'm not sure what point I am trying to make here. Maybe I should walk/carry my dog more often to build upper body strength? She is pretty heavy, after all.

Snacking is dangerous and you're good avoiding it so much. But one thing which people don't realize is so dangerous is drinks. Even 'healty' drinks like juice are full of sugar, and ones which you may be drinking regularly (like coffee and tea) can also be very bad (it's possible to go into starbucks and get a coffee with twice as many calories as a mcdonald's burger). Make sure you drink nothing but water, and drink loads of it - I get through about a gallon on an average day, a lot more if I'm doing exercise.

If you're just starting your exercise regime, then 45 minutes of running is an awful lot to do. Running is a very high impact activity, and if you don't build up gradually you can do yourself an injury. Mix in a variety of other activities that target a range of areas of your body, especially low-impact ones at the start. Running is good, but you can't do just running, and you need to do it in small amounts. Back in january I started doing similar length running sessions without building up, and I ended up injuring my knee over the course of four or five sessions. I was unable to do any physical activity for about three or four weeks (even stairs were a massive task), and I was unable to do any running, even short distance, for about two months. Since then I've been able to do some short and middle distance stuff, but over six months later long distance is still something that causes me problems.

I keep half-liter water bottles in the fridge, and refill them after I drink, rotating so they're always cool when I need them. I find that to be a good amount - not so much that you don't want to drink it all, but enough to hydrate you effectively.
Also, milk is good a couple of times a day. Protein and calcium. The less fat the better, obviously.

Well now don't fat out completely from the body, you can dump carbs and protein in your body all day but you still need some fat in the diet.

I was talking about just the milk. Not much sense drinking whole milk when you can get less fatty milk with the same nutrition, considering he'll probably be getting a reasonable amount of fat from food.

You do need fat in your diet, but there's so much of it in most foods that you don't need to dedicate a portion of your diet to it.

I feel that I must cut in with something: a person that exercises do not burn that many more calories than a person sitting still doing nothing. Most of the energy used by the body is that which keeps the internal organs running, which is significantly larger than that spent building muscle. The only thing that really affects your weight is how much you eat. Keeping to a diet is the single most important thing to do.

Exercise is still important to general health, but does not help in getting lighter.

I don't have time to read the whole thread here, but as someone who went from weighing about 315lbs. to 160lbs., let me be the first to say that it's absolutely doable.  Be prepared for it to take forever and a day though!  I lost that weight over the combined course of about 3 years (50lbs. one year, then I maintained that for a few years, and lost the rest of the course of the last two years).

A few things I can suggest based on my experience:

Do not eat too little.  I'm serious.  I've been there, and done that.  It genuinely does make losing weight harder, and makes you feel like absolute crap.  I wouldn't eat any less than about 1700 calories per day.

Eating a better balance of nutrients is a good idea.  Veggies and lean meat like fish (not fried!) and chicken (not fried!) will help put a dent in the calories up front, and make a big difference.  I'd also take this opportunity to try new foods.  I learned to like a lot of new foods during that dieting period.

I never really got into taking vitamins, and I don't think it really made any difference.  Probably couldn't hurt though.

Exercise is a good idea, although the vast majority of your calorie deficit will just come from dieting.  I wouldn't try strength training much though, if you were considering it.  After the first couple of weeks I stopped getting stronger and started getting weaker.  I might have just been overdoing it, but I ignored advice from others that your body is bad at losing weight and gaining strength at the same time and had to let my body prove them right.  After a few months I felt horrible constantly, and only felt better after I stopped.  If you do plan on strength training, keep it low key and focus on aerobics.

Last, but not least: you're going to be in this for the long haul, so don't get in the diet mindset or you'll never stick with it.  One thing I found that helped me tremendously is that I still mostly ate what foods I wanted.  I just ate less of them.  I mixed it up with healthy stuff like baked fish and fresh vegetables, but I still occasionally ate pizza.  I just stopped eating 2,000 calories of it at a time, and kept the frequency of it to a minimum (once a week or so for 'unhealthy' food).  Eating fast food less in general is a big step in the right direction, but don't cut it out completely.

Trying to realize that you really need a lifestyle change moreso than a diet is the first step to success.  It's tough at first, but after you've been doing it for even a week it gets easier.

Good luck!

That was an inspiring read, and I appreciate it. Just knowing that someone's been down the path that we're started on makes it easier to see the end.
