Yeah, but it's prohibitively expensive for most people. Like how computers used to only be owned by universities, because they were the only places which could purchase all the expensive equipment.

It's quickly getting a hell of a lot cheaper. $425 is the lowest, currently.

Which, incidentally, parallels the development of computers quite well. Given the potential I honestly don't see why it wouldn't take a similar course.

Printing food? Cool, this means we're one step closer to making graples that are actually apples made of grape-stuff instead of apples injected with fake grape flavor.

When that happens, we will have entered a new age of food technology.

I'd imagine at least a few of the cheaper ones available would be able to print something like chocolate.

I think there are already specialized printers for chocolate.

Problem with food printers for now is that they're quite maintenance intensive. Ie, the time you win by not cooking stuff yourself you loose in cleaning the various tubes of the machine.

It doesn't actually cook anything. If the food it produces isn't fit for consumption without further preparation, you still need to cook it. That aside, it's not exactly a complex array of tubes. Depending on the model you either have a handful of syringe arrangements or a setup more like a traditional ink printer with reservoirs containing different types of biogel; in either case there's relatively little to clean. The time saved is primarily in pre-cooking preparation. That aside, the potential for it has less to do with time saving and more to do with nutrient control and reducing the agricultural burden on the world.

On one hand, saving the world. On the other, I still need to do work, but also have to buy a expensive piece of machinery. On the first hand, it's cool.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I don't see it as any different than the replicators on star trek.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

That actually happens though. Only the ooze is pink and made of grinded up animal remains (The parts that are normally not eaten).

At least with the printing system you can check what you put in it.

On the other hand, there's the Nutri-o-matic.

Do note that this recycled meat is not put in 3D printers*. It's put in fastfood, right now.

*Texture problems and such
