Graknorke, stop telling me the water's blue when it's obviously cyan!

Isn't it blue because it reflects the sky? So it's not innately blue.

This isn't true; it's blue for the same reason the sky is, but not because of the sky.

Wouldn't it be more because water under certain conditions forms a reflective surface akin to a mirror, even though it is actually transparent (when pure; obviously water laced with a chemical can be colored)? Water reflecting the sky appears as the same color as the sky because of the way the sky filters light, and reflects other objects as the colors they appear as for the same reasons. Water doesn't filter or reflect certain wavelengths of light, it either does or does not reflect (or, quite often, both at once); when the water appears blue it is because it is reflecting an image of the sky (which happens to be blue) rather than because it absorbs all other wavelengths of light, for the same reason that we don't say that a mirror is blue when we lay it on the ground outside. A colored tint underwater is due to light which is refracted rather than reflected.

Or maybe my brain is fuzzy tonight.

You do understand that the sides of that pool are colored blue, and the water is transparent, right?

It's blue because water reflects a tiny amount of blue light. Or... absorbs a tiny amount of non-blue light. One of the two. Maybe both.

I couldn't find any images of the pool when empty (not surprisingly, considering how much water is in that thing) and I'm tired of idle speculation, so I decided to just look it up:

Water is weakly blue, more apparent with larger quantities. Impurities and ambient colors (like the sky) can change what it looks like.

I'd talk about the tyndale effect, but I'm too tired to be sure i'd get the details right.
But basically, the perceived color depends, primarily, upon the SIZE of the suspended particles.

There's a discussion of communism on another forum I frequent.  Instead of the usual tactics when the inevitable Stalin arguments come up, the current Communism proponent has taken a different route:  The USSR was great, the holodomor didn't happen and the gulags weren't that bad.

What. Have you seen the person's typical arguments before, or is there some slim chance that they're trolling? Because if you're trying to mount a defense of communism one would think that a key point would be discrediting Stalin as a communist leader in the same way that Hitler should be discredited as an example of a normal democratically elected leader.

I hate it when I can't tell if someone is being deliberately obtuse or is just stupid.

In cases like that, the person is either incredibly stupid, or just trolling.

The response in either case is to the denounce the person, and ignore their argument.
